You are kidding me? You live in the Desert Southwest and you don't have AC in your house? You must live at a high elevation then?

about 7000 feet. it gets to high 80s, low 90s in summer in the afternoon, but as soon as the sun sets, it cools off rapidly, like 25-30 degree drop during the night. it was 62 when i got up this morning. so we open windows and turn fans on to keep the air moving.

Ok. Makes complete sense now. Pretty much exactly like our cabin. It's at about 7k as well. No AC in the place, don't need it.

I had a white roof, now it's 75% gray, and the temps went up, and the electricity went up. At the end of the day, if I have to worry about a $450 electric bill, I'm in the wrong house. I'm gearing up to spend a grand a month on a mid-engine...my electric bill is just fine. In 12 months, I'll be done with a grand a month on 2 cars, so a 2020 is very likely to happen in 2020.

About on par. Do you have a AC unit just for the office?

YES!!! And get the Mitsubishi, just like I have. This is the 3rd unit I've had in this office in 19 years and it's head and shoulders above the rest. Still needs to be torn apart and cleaned every so often, but so worth it.

They are great units. I spent a lot of time in Asia and they had the majority of that market.

I've got a Portable AC in the master bedroom to supplement things because it gets so hot. Our cat lives in there, so on the super hot days we try to keep her comfortable. It's the only sizeable West facing window in the house, so it gets pretty bad in the Afternoon's during the Summertime.

It works pretty well.

Have you considered solar screens? I just put some on the west and south-ish facing windows after my neighbor cut down 3 trees that gave me a lot of afternoon shade. My July bill was slightly less than my June bill, even with the loss of the trees. So, no trees, plus hotter temps, and bill didn't go up....I'd say they work OK.

Funny as hell, yawl mentioning RAC units, my folks back about 60 years ago bought two Admiral window units, and so one of them still exists....went to my stepson's place, wife's old home, and so he and d/f don't need the central unit keeping the entire place cool, so got that unit off my garage floor and are using it to cool about 1/3 of the place......fan into the bedroom for overnight....

probably cut electric by 50% easy.....
