Yessir, I spent years in the dealership in all capacities in the "front," I totally can believe that story and have a few that are more outlandish. I don't get offended at the term "saleshole" and would have invented it if someone hadn't already. Most guys that work in sales on the floor are decent dudes, but a sizeable percentage are not. It takes a certain type of guy who can do what it takes to sell cars. Some do it because they are good at it, others do it because it's the only job they can get after living a dodgy life so far.....and they somehow can get "ups" to buy before they leave.

There is ONE thing that counts for being successful and making a living selling cars. It isn't product knowledge, nor responding nicely to internet leads, or getting people to like you. It's getting people to leave in a different car than the one they rode in on. That's it, no more. If they leave in the car they brought, you will never see them again. Doesn't matter how much they liked you or the shit you showed them. You will NEVER seem them again.

Good deal man! Sorry we couldn't make it work the other night when I was in the city.

Always nice to take care of the staff. One of the goofy things I've always done is to take care of my room and leave it tidy; used towels on the floor in a neat pile, garbage consolidated to 1 bin, throw out the used soap from the shower etc.

I'll reach out again in a few weeks when you're back in town.

Thanks for the inside info. And I agree, car sales is similar to the survival of the fittest. You sell or go find another job.

You know what some salesmen call the service department? (In a kidding way)

GrossBusters

Explanation: Commissions are not based on the price of the vehicle sold, they are based on gross profit. So the more the sales department had to spend on the car in the service dept. to make the car lot-ready, the less potential profit on that unit and the lower the commission.

Saying Thank You is easy. SHOWING it, even gestures like this, speak volumes about how they are really appreciated.

Good on both of ya!

I was the director of North American sales at the job I retired out of last year. I learned early on that if you take care of the folks who you depend on or support you in some way, they will go out of their way to take care of you, and it doesn’t require a grand gesture. I learned this during my military career and carried it over into my second life.

Oddly, the little things I did to reward or recognize effort was unusual among my peers. The production people told me all the time that I was the only one who seemed to appreciate their efforts. Do the little things, and they’ll move mountains for you. It’s basic leadership.

My jobs never afforded me to do that. I was required to maintain an independence as an auditor in public accounting or Government contracting. I did have a year or two and I had four offices reporting to me and I was able to do little things for the offices when I visited. I enjoyed it and they did not know what to think about it when I would bring food and flowers for the ladies.
