Cover letter
When asked to submit salary requirements with resume AND a cover letter, what exactly should be in the cover letter? I've been lucky I guess in that I've never had to submit a cover letter, just my resume. I assume the cover letter should be a quick summary of past experience?

it gives them a way to weed out applicants who want to get paid more than they want to offer. you actually think anyone has ever been told 'bob, you didn't ask for enough, we're going to bump it up 50k'?
several ways you can play it: low ball them, in hopes of getting an interview, offer, and then try to ask for more then (good luck); shoot straight, hope you are in their ballpark, and get an interview and an offer of what you asked for; aim high, perhaps they will realize that their offer is way too low to attract qualified help, and will offer you want you want. me, i either evade the question, or shoot straight. |

Your resume should be formatted to reflect your past work history and achievements. The cover letter should be brief, but to the point, explaining how you would be a good fit for the position / company. If you are asked to submit a cover letter to include salary requirements, by all means, make sure that's what you do. Many recruiters / employers will toss your information into the trash if you don't give them what is is they are asking.
Do a salary search on Indeed.com or CareerBuilder.com to see what the going rate is for the position. Sometimes you can get the information on Indeed about the company salaries for positions in the company for which you are interested. |
