ASK A COP:
I know Im new, and I know a lot of people dont like cops.... however, I usually do this on forums where I feel I will be spending a good amount of time.
I make a thread, simply for people to ask any questions. Of course I would prefer that my profession not be bashed simply for what it is, however I have no problem "debating." If you guys dont think its a good idea, feel free to delete or LOCK the thread. However if you guys dig it... fire away whenever you have a question. My background: 10+ years Police Officer in a small Township, just outside of Philadelphia PA. TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT, ACCIDENT RECONSTRUCTION, FTO, NIGHT SHIFT SUPERVISOR, and finally INVESTIGATIONS. |

Welcome to the barn! Got a question: Is it illegal for cops to sit on the side of the highway with all there lights off, totally black at night, with radar on just waiting to catch speeders? |

No it is not illegal. We are allowed to park as hidden as we can manage. No mandate as to being visible, or leaving lights on or anything of the sort.
Ive heard that "tale" before though, and it is completely False. |

how fast do you drive when you are on your off time? I have a badged friend in AZ (ret) who doesn't work the streets, but is in a probation office as a consultant...he's really legit on the laws even though he wants to roll at 100 mph.
I know I'm a career criminal when it comes to CA 22349,22350 vc. I don't know how you do it, but if you do, how does the professional courtesy thing work out? |

Also, what is your background training? Is it OJT or is there some formal college level training you have received? Like BS-CJ, perhaps? |

Ok, since I still cant quote I will have to do it like this:
MIKE100: Im just like anyone else. I love cars, and yes there are times I have not followed the rules. Ive been cited for tinted windows as a Police Officer, and given a written warning for jabbing it through 1st and 2nd in my camaro. My license plate makes it clear I am L.E. and it does help. Not saying Im any better than anyone else, however the courtesy does come in handy MOST of the time. To PAPPYTINKER: I have a BS in Criminal Justice and Psychology. I graduated in 1998, and I put myself through the Police Academy in 2000 before being hired with my current department. And yes my knowledge is limited to PA, outside of the Federal Statutes that I am aware of... however MANY similarities do carry over. To Wathen1955: Thank you for the welcome.... its good to be here. To C4 fan: I dont consider it a debate, because there is no written rule for such a thing. However if prior to my 10 years on the job it was a "rule of thumb," or something along those lines I am not aware. To Taurus: Your funny, but it does remind me of a funny story. I once paced a SMART car at 88mph. I did not have the heart to stop the car, being that the guy had the balls to go that fast..... To WW7: THank you for the welcome, and at 35 years old, when I was younger, I do believe it is documented that Barney had to carry his pistol unloaded, and yes he kept one round in his shirt pocket. lol To Taurus: CLASSIC SCENE. One of my favorite parts of that movie. IDK that I wouldve handled it any different than the motor unit in the movie. ANd were you asking me about the Union jokes? Because if so... no, Im not offended. In fact I pay $300 a year to the FOP (union) and they do NOTHING for us. NEXT.... |

WW7, we have been discussing switching to them, however it costs more and the guys I work with are cheap. As the FOP rep for our PD, I have to struggle to get the dues..... Its horrible.
On another note, Im not sure what my career has in store or me. January 26, 2011, I hurt my back while on duty. Long Story short, shady politics, kept my PD pushing me to work with the aid of a corrupt Workmans Comp Doctor who insisted I was faking because he could not see anything "structuraly wrong." I switched Doctors, after two other opinions that conflicted with him, and now a year later, I have been put out on Heart and Lung (our workman's comp)..... Taurus, who is that. IDK if I would want to know that individual..... And who owns a SUBY that has you irritated with them? |

Subarus and Hokie are separate issues. Hokie is a compulsive liar who wouldn't stop even when you caught in in a lie and called him to the carpet. It became amusing, then intolerable, then absolutely hilarious...then he disappeared. There was some mail order bride and non-password protected photobucket account hilarity along the way.

Welcome............with a question
I have been trying to get the General Assembly in VA to go to 1 license plate for years sighting cost savings of 1 million + a year ( keep the price, go to 1 plate!!!)....and it would look better Many of my local LEOs agree, 20 states already have 1 plate and many studies prove no loss to safety with 1 vs. 2 plates. I do understand in some circumstances that the front plate can help identify a vehicle……………..my question is HOW can get the VA state police(Virginia State Police) to agree………….the good Colonel W. Steven Flaherty refuses to give me a good reason as he shoots in down every year which means bills never makes it out of committee! FYI, here is what I have sent once again to him: Dear Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent. I would like your view on why we should or should not go to one rear license plate only in Virginia . I am trying to raise revenue for VA in a common sense way and this seems to me and many others a win win situation. In the 20 or more states that have abolished the front license plate requirement, there is no credible evidence of a decline in public safety as a result of the plate removal. I have talked with my local Police Chiefs and Sheriffs and they have no issue with going to one rear license plate. As my local LEO’s reminded me……….they chase, surveil and pull cars over from behind. I look forward to your reply and a chance to discuss this with you. Thank you in advance for your help. Sincerely, TIA for your thoughts Steve |
