TV Enthusiasts, Step Inside
My 11 year old Samsung 55" is dying, the picture has intermittent ghosting and recently, intermittently is a little darker, adjusting the backlight doesn't seem to help, it just does what it wants to....sometimes sterling, clear pic, sometimes ghosting, even with a blueray source. This is a bedroom TV, so it gets used very little, not every day.
So I'm considering upgrading with a new one, figured I'd go a little bigger since I'm willing to drop money on this. Considering these two choices. One seems to be a '19 model, one is a 'refurbished' '18 model. WWVB choose? https://www.walmart.com/ip/SAMSUNG-6...6900/654638449 Pros: Under $ 500. New. Con: 60 Hz refresh rate (edit: Dell says it's a 120Hz refresh) Slightly cheaper/free shipping here: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/sams...v-home-theater https://www.walmart.com/ip/Refurbish...FXZA/867361246 Pros: 240 Hz refresh rate, seems to be a better picture, more features I probably won't use Cons: $ 700, 'refurbished' |

I quit reading at "refurbished" as there's no way I'd buy a refurbished TV.

No membership needed. You only need to know someone with a membership. Either bring them with you or have them buy you a Costco gift card for enough to buy the TV.

I've bought nothing but Samsung TVs this century, and they've all been great (except one el-cheapo 27" kitchen TV that died one day, replaced by a 32" model years ago.) If that 70" one is too big, you should be able to get a 65" version a little cheaper. But if you can go that big, why not? It's not that much bigger than a 55".

Click this link and you'll see the Samsung 4K 65" TV's WalMart has. One is under $500.
For the low-end LCD's, I like to get one that has good black levels. Usually those are a bit more than the absolute cheapest ones. You might have to do some investigating because typically the models Samsung makes for WalMart (or Best Buy) have different model numbers than the ones on their website. That means if WalMart doesn't tell you what the contrast is (the higher the better the black levels) then you might have to guess. Usually once you get over about $800 or so, the extra features you are paying for are stuff you probably don't care about. |

We just bought our third a Samsung.
First one was a bedroom TV purchased about 8 years ago Next one was for another bedroom, purchased about 2 years ago. Just bought a new one to replace our Panasonic plasma that decided to self destruct We have not had a single problem so far |

My only complaint (probably something I have wonked up) is that I still have issues with source selection where sound is concerned. the TV and the Home Theater amp have a dysfunctional relationship.

I have a 46" Samsung that I bought 11 years ago. It is on for most of the day, and it has worked flawlessly. I paid around 1K for it back then. When it needs replacing, it will cost me less than $400 for a larger one.

All this by is hate on refurbished tv’s I bought 3 to Shi a 40” refurbs from NewEgg 11 years ago, all three still work beautifully.
That 70” looks like a nice deal, don’t forget Frys will price match. And don’t forget to check amazon and Newegg. |
