We have black squirrels too but they're kind of rare. Not as rare as albinos but I've only ever seen a few and I've done a lot of squirrel hunting. Used to want to get one mounted by a taxidermist. Problem is I'd have to kill one first and that never happened because every time I unexpectedly saw one I'd get "buck fever", rush the shot, and miss the darn thing... So I gave up on that idea

That's interesting that you have them too. Nobody else mentioned it, and I've never seen any except around here in the past 40 years. I turned 14 in 1964 and started hunting small game (legally) that fall and squirrels were the first, but never saw anything but grays until I moved here.

FWIW, we used shotguns; were you using a .22? I remember too that it was tough to see them when the leaves were still on the trees, much easier to see and hit them when the leaves were down.

Used a shotgun first ten years or so then began hunting them with a 22 LR tube feed semi-auto. I was averaging about one squirrel per tube though (not many got away) so I switched to a 22mag bolt action in order to conserve ammo.
