Tell me about your job fk up.
I'm breaking from my total panic to relay that I totally fkd something up on my job. Much like my traffic tickets, it doesn't happen often...maybe once every three or four years, but damn.
I sent out on order overnight and we have someone flying out to arrive at nearly the time of delivery, to do training using the product ordered. Critical training. This order was based on an estimate I created. The customer EDITED my estimate and put in a different "ship to" address and sent it back to me as an order. I missed the address change. I converted the quote, as it was in our system, to an actual order. Now I have product in one state and a trainer in another. I'm so very fk'd. Help me down off the ceiling with a good "I've fk'd up too" story. |

Back in the '80s, I worked for Park City Ski Resort. I slid a snow cat into the corner of the lift operators locker room. It definitely ****ed up the building. The resort called me out at the end of the season and gave me an award.

When I was a young controls engineer and learning the business the salesman asked me to order the starters for the rooftop units and to make sure they are rated for outdoor use. Well as some of you know there's Nema-3R, Nema-4 and Nema-4X enclosures... so pulled out the ole Allen Bradley catalog and picked some nice shiny stainless steel Nema-4 screw cover enclosures which was about $50,000 above the estimate and the difference between a Nema-3R.
I was told airplanes at 32,000 feet would be able to see the shiny enclosures for years.... |

I may have been responsible for more than one memo from corporate saying don't so this or don't say that. Details elude me...
Usually my **** ups were software related and cost me time to fix on my own... Loaded wrong software on several hundred machines once for an important training exercise which cost me an entire weekend to fix on my time. My boss turned in a time sheet and big boss called asked if he used a ****in crayon looked so bad. A memo ensued stating what was acceptable and they used his as example just blanked his name out. I had access to map printers so i made a poster for him. |

Honesty is the best policy -
Unbeknownst to me a 9mm magazine fell out of my coat as I put it on to leave work once. The next shift found it laying on the carpet next to my chair. The next day when I showed up the boss was waiting for me at the door. Ut-oh, didn't know what for but I knew it wasn't going to be good. He took me into a meeting room and showed me a picture of the evidence on his laptop and wanted to know if it was mine. I gave him a big smile relieved to know what it was about and said "yup". He looked like he saw a ghost. Apparently expected me to lie and was prepared to not believe what I said so I reassured him that there's no doubt since they quit manufacturing those bullets 20 years ago and it's not likely anyone else in the county owns any He asked why I brought it to work. Told him it was the first time I'd worn the coat since Summer just ended and didn't know it was in the pocket. He sent me to security to collect my magazine and I went home while they played office politics for 3 or 4 days trying to figure out if I should be fired or not because of the "no weapons" policy. Bullets aren't a weapon but knowing those goody two shoe dorks anything was possible. No biggie, had enough time in to retire if they wanted to play that game. Ended up getting a call to return to work as usual and nothing more was ever said about it. |

While working as a Gas Turbine Inspector in the Navy, another inspector had made four calls to change out some turbines he said had cracked compressor casings. Each turbine costs $350,000 plus the labor to change it out. My team was down on a ship getting ready to change a turbine and called me about a question on the compressor front frame. I headed down and when I got there about went off the deep end on why we were changing out a perfectly good engine. My mentor came down and confirmed there was nothing wrong with the turbine. When he confronted the other inspector and showed him the cracks he was calling out was the split line for the compressor. You could have heard a pin drop it got so quiet.
On my biggest screw up, when I was a young sailor, E-5, we had a rash of bad fuel controls for our LM2500 main gas turbines. The fix was to do a wet motor of the engine and then tap the fuel control with a rubber mallet to get it to unstick. We tried it a few times and kept having to change out the fuel control. The assembly was a $150,000 part which was rebuildable. I got curious what was inside one and decided to take it apart to see what made it tick. Getting it apart was easy, back together not so easy. I sort of assembled the control and sent it back to the depot thinking nothing of it. Two months later we get a little nasty gram with pictures asking what happened to the control, had to explain that one to the Captain. He was an engineer at heart and laughed about it. Told the depot to piss off. |

I misadjusted a 1500 ton injection molding press causing it to jump 10 inches off the floor once. Sounded like a sonic boom and made the whole 3 story building shake like an earthquake... That's a mistake you won't make twice!
Was alone working thru lunch. Lots of people in the building but nobody mentioned it so whatever. Took me some time to get over the shock but I eventually got the adjustment figured out. Was like a decimal error? Amazing that nothing was damaged but if it had been then that's what they get for making me train myself. Trial and error for the win |
