In VA, it was 140'.

If you plan to build it, I would heartily recommend one that is divisible by 4 in all dimensions. Try to build 11x9 and I can guarantee you are going to waste a bunch of materials.

For 100' - 8x12
For 140' - 8x16

I went to 12x12 and just pleaded the fifth.

That's what it is here, less than 100 square feet, and not within the setback distance to the property line (15 ft. IIRC?), does not need a permit, and should not impact your property assessment for tax purposes. So mine is 8' x 12', 96 square feet, and not encroaching the property line, like hundreds of other sheds in town!

Damn that sucks
I have a pole barn that will never be taxed. I can build as many non residential buildings on my property as I want and they will never be taxed. I also have sales tax exemption on many items.
I should have done this agricultural thing years ago.

If the storage places would schedule a "dump day" I could trim it all down, but that works against their business model.
I have a car interior and some lawn chairs and coolers stored in the rafters of my shop. I agree they take up a lot of room. Need to get rid of the C2 Corvette stuff I'll never use.

The value of what I had vs what I paid in total when I used a storage unit was probably a wash.
I did use a small storage unit that burned down in a fire, and was lucky to get compensated but a few sentimental items have no price tag.

I swore that I'd never have one. Then we downsized by selling out city home and planned, built an addition. We got rid of a lot of stuff prior to the move, unloaded furniture on my adult son for his first house, then my daughters for hers. I Craigslisted the shit out of a what we would never use, gave more shit away, and filled up our 90 gallon rubbish cart weekly.

All totalled we had about 18 months into the storage unit. So $3400. That picture shows us down to about 30% of what was in there. Did we store $3400 worth of stuff? At least ten feet of photo albums, what are these worth? My extra set of wheels for my Porch cost a bit. We paid nearly that for an Amish kitchen table and chairs. My Italian leather couch. Along with the Nordic track also an all mountain ski trainer. Four pairs of ski boots. A queen size bed and mattress.

A friend of mine has three in Atlanta, costing her $800/ month. Crazy.

I never saw the need. Until. We needed to empty my mother-in-laws house and independent living apartment when she passed. House was 50 miles away and needed to get the stuff closer for easier elimination. We got a 10x16 unit and moved alot of the stuff in there, gave a bunch away, sent a bunch to charities. we started out at $139 per month, then increases every 6 months. When we got a notice that we were going to be charged $259 per month, f that. I told the guy we would be out in 3 days. Moved everything to the house, boxes covered the pool table and surrounding areas, furniture on the porch. We quickly found homes for most of it.

I rented one once because I was given a couple truckloads of oak hardwood flooring with no place to store it. This was the 1980’s and I believe it was 100 bux per month. After about 6 months I realized that it was a lost cause so I gave some of the oak away and burned the rest in the fireplace. I have to tell you that the kiln dried red oak sure made a nice fire.
