Learned how to drive in an "old" Ford pickup truck, with the 3 on the tree. I think I was 11 or 12. Maybe 10.

Had the party line, but I don't remember having a word in front of the number. Just remember a 5 digit number. Don't remember what it was though...

Remember switching from Imperial to Metric. What a pain in the ass that was...

My parents told me not to worry about learning the metric system. We won the war, they said.

The first phone I remember at our house had no dial. Our phone number was 535. My uncle's number was 2 digits. I once picked up the phone and told the operator I wanted to talk to my uncle and she rang him from memory.

Those were the days.

Yeah Larry, you dialed that phone pissing off the person on the other end because it was a party line and it took you that long to realize the phone was in use already. Does remembering party lines and actually having used one make me old too? Don't answer that last question truthfully if ya know what's good for ya!!!

I used a rotary just last year. We had a power out and all the other phones in the house would not work. I keep it just for reasons like that. It takes a bit longer to dial out but it works and it always rings!

I do have a generator that will keep all phones working, but we were going out for a couple hours when the phone range. If the power was still out I would have activated the generator when we returned!

That is exactly why I keep two old phones--one in the house and one in my workshop--in case the power goes out. With a damned cordless phone you can't call the power company in case of an outage.

No three-on-the-tree, but learned how to drive on a Mercedes with a four-on-the-tree.

Here's a funny- both kids learned to drive initially on the same '63 international flatbed. Four speed, no power robbing accessories whatsoever (ex Forest Service truck). School District still owns it, it still runs, and young 'uns are still driving it in the woods (private property).

Default I'm so old that...

I have said goodbye to, and welcomed people at the airport gate that were either leaving or arriving.

Legally drank in a bar at 18.

Listened to a portable radio that used a 9v battery

Saw muscle cars in the showroom

Did "Eeny, meany, miney, moe" and caught a ni**er by his toe. (sorry)

Had Mediterranean furniture

Cut grass with a non-motorized lawn mower

Drank water from a garden hose

Swung on wooden swings in the park

Played on a playground at a drive-in movie

Rode in a brand new 1964 Impala and a new 1969 Corvette

Ran clothes through a ringer

This thread is making me feel the years. When I was a youngster, I remember the clop, clop, clop of the horse's hooves as he pulled the Gordon's Dairy wagon up our street every morning about 6 am when we were waking up to get dressed for school. I was about 7 yrs old in 1952 and Toronto was a big city but strongly held onto the old school way of things. We also had horse-drawn wagons for the bakery and the faithful iceman.

Teasing the horses on the way to school was great fun while the deliveryman was up at someone's house. We still had steam locomotives running through town up into 1962, I believe.
