Plumbers, 320' run from well to barn has low pressure.
Hey guys, I am running water down to my barn, it is a 320' run. I came straight off the well with a 1.25" line for 100' then a 1" for 100' then a 1/2" line for 120'. There is a rise of about 4' from the well to the apex about 180' away, so up hill for 180', then down hill the last 140'. I have almost no pressure at the barn and at this point I am thinking I need an additional pump on the line somewhere. Anyone got ideas or know what I need to do to increase pressure down at the barn?

no pressure or no flow?
so you are net up hill how much, elevation wise? the 1/2" line is not a help either. i have a pump in my rainwater cistern by the shop, i run 400 feet of 5/8" hose to the house, pressure and flow are fine. it's uphill about 20 feet. |

I would say no flow, very small trickle of water is all I get. I would say net uphill ends up being about 5'. At this point I am kind of wishing I had gone with a holding tank and a pump at the barn itself. I figured Id call my plumber and see what he says but Id like to have some idea before he just tells me to throw a bigger pump on the well. Pressure in the house is fine even with the added 320'.

if you have a pressure gauge, you can know the pressure with no flow. ideally, it would be at least 40psi where you want the water to come out.
without knowing the details of the pump, it's hard to know if it's sized correctly. |

You're gonna need a bigger pump.

What is the standing pressure at both ends? You lose 1/2# per foot of rise, is there more elevation difference than it looks?

What is the pressure and flow rate at the well head? What is the draw down water level in the well?

Problem probably isn't elevation, it's friction loss. I'll use 5gpm as an example, but it sounds like you aren't even seeing 1gpm.
At 5gpm you'll increase the apparent head by more than 25' with the 1/2" run. If there are any disruptions in a run that long, they'll kill you. The best way to troubleshoot is to see if you have pressure with zero flow rate. If you have expected pressure, it's a flow issue vs. a physical head issue. Bigger (or added) pump, or bigger pipe is really the only option. |

1/2 inch line all the way, the pump too weak to lift the weight of all that water in a 1.25" line, and so to keep that weight down, and so the pressure/flow will be the same as the 1/2 inch line is the last of the run......IMO......

I went and looked at the pump tag yesterday, it says is that it is a 200' deep line and flows 15GPM, other than date installed and the company that installed it, thats it.

as noted above, you have too many friction losses. get a bigger line than the 1/2" line. |

ok, the plan is to replace all the 1/2" with 1" and then use the 1/2" for plumbing the compressed air from the shop to the barn. After I do that Ill report back and let you know what happened.

So as planned, I replaced all the 1/2" with 1" and the thing flows like a fire hose now. If I had just followed my friends advice in the first place and run the whole length with 3/4" I would have had water last week... Thanks for all the suggestions and some of the ridicule.
