Default Youtube making repairmen obsolete...

Never been a 'handyman' so to speak. I have the shiniest tools ever; because they're rarely used.

But our washing machine broke yesterday wouldn't drain. I went on YouTube did some searching and watching. Felt confident enough to tackle the job myself.

Pulled the back off, unclamped the drain hose from the pump and drained the machine. Turned it over and removed the drain pump. Sure enough the impeller is broke clean off and just rattling around inside the pump case.

Ordered a replacement pump on Amazon for $70; it'll be here tomorrow. Should be a quick job to swap the hoses onto the new pump an put everything back together.

Feeling quite proud of myself, if even a bit pre-mature....

Mrs Flex lookin' at me with that gleam in her eye.

Happy Friday.

Congrats

Youtube is a nice resource even if you know how to do it. Someone may have figured out a better way to do it.

Had the turn signal flasher module go bad on my 04 Suburban. Found a nine minute video explaining how to do it. I had it done in just under 8 minutes

True story: My daughter was driving my wife's old 1995 Camry, and broke the inner door handle on the driver door. She was an Engineering student in college at the time, and REALLY wanted to fix it herself, rather than hear a bunch of shit from her male classmates.

So, she orders the part, and she and I go to replace the handle. We follow a somewhat complicated process to get the inner door panel off, and succeed only to find out that there is glass blocking us from the mechanism of the door handle so we can no longer follow the instructions!

It took us a while, but eventually we figured out that we should have rolled up the window before starting on this repair.

Let's just say, it was a learning experience for both of us, shall we?

The moral of the story is: If Meathead can figure out how to fix his washing machine, anyone can.

Id say Ive say thousands of $$$ using YouTube videos. My best one was fixing my 1999 Silverado digital odometer. I had actually taken it to the shop and was quoted $1200 to remove, send off, and replace the digital odometer. Using YouTube, I pulled the cluster (10 minutes) re soldered a cold solder on the digital board. (20 minutes) Replaced and tested back in truck. (10 minutes). Saved $1200, a week without my truck, and retain my manhood.

The home appliance repair game is all online now. Most of the places that you can buy replacement parts from have how to videos to show you how to fix virtually anything. Our Washer and Dryer have been serviced by me for a decade + because of this. I just received a belt and pulley replacement kit for our dryer just today. I'll do that this weekend, but fixing these types of things is really easy in the big scheme of things.
