So much for getting any sleep
About 11:00 me and my friends smelled something burning in the house. We couldn't track it down, but I unplugged some scented wax thing that was plugged in and made sure the oven was off etc. They all left at 12:00 and I went to bed. I woke up a little after 1:00 to the smell. I went through the entire house, attic, garage etc and can't track it down. If I shine a flashlight in the dark, I can see faint smoke. I decided I better call the fire department. They showed up with three guys. None could smell anything. They did a cursory look at the house and decided I should open some windows and see if it goes away.
The only odd part of this is that the upstairs thermostat was dead/blank, but the unit was running. The downstairs thermostat was lit and functioning. I swapped them and now neither one works. Now I lay here with windows opened, fans going, and too paranoid to sleep. They told me to call them back if I discover anything. |

Are the thermostats powered by the HVAC unit or batteries? If the former, I'd check the voltage being provided and its source at the HVAC unit. Seems unlikely, but maybe something screwed up & fried the thermostats, and the frying made the smoke/smell?

My house was built in '72, and it was full of aluminum wiring....well with all the additions and kitchen/bath remodeling/updating, the house is mainly copper wiring now.....only parts remaining are the hallway and 3 bedrooms, all else is copper.......went from a 20 ckt to a new 30 ckt panel.....
lo voltage stat wiring really no fire hazard.....the little transformers have protection built in.... course you could always go to home despot and buy two new 'noids'.....that way you can hang them together....and have a pair...... |

You’ve got to stop playing with electricity.......
With thermostat head unit removed, you should see low voltage DC on the contacts... if not, go to the unit and check low voltage X-former Which could be the issue..... and smell |

One morning we smelled rubber burning and looked for the source, didn't find it and went on with our business for a bit.
Later my wife noticed some black around one of the wall sockets where the power strip was plugged in, when she unplugged it the tab was black and burnt. New wall socket and all better, I replaced all of them in the house of the same age

Smelled smoke in bedroom and couldn't find it. Coincidentally the land line was acting up. Repairman shows up 5 days later. Phone line, at wall port, by baseboard was melting at connection/clip. Repairman took line to teach with. Stating there is enough electricity in phone lines to cause fires when faulty. |

Had a similar situation a couple of months ago. Both wife and I could smell something that smelled like burning metal. Walked all around trying to find source and couldn’t. She goes out and I sit down to watch TV. 50” Panasonic plasma TV about15 years old. A couple of minutes after turning it on, the screen goes wonky and sparks flying out of the back. I reached behind and pulled the power cord. Where the power cord plugged into the TV was all melted.
