Default $10,700 - how much?

Seems a little high for a water heater and a boiler. My search shows a nice water heater runs about $700, and a boiler $2500.

I'm not seeing $6000 of labor for a day's work.

More bids being sought this week.

Water heater- 50 gal, 36000-40000 btu propane, 9-12 year warranty.

Boiler- 140,000 btu hydronic propane.

If I wasn't afraid of propane leaks, I'd do it myself.

Just use a cigarette lighter to check for leaks wherever you have fittings or have pipe sweated on. That way you know it's safe and leak free.

$6000 in labor?

Man, that's the way I felt about the labor to replace the controller in my hot tub. I did it myself, saved money, did a better job (probably) than a pro woulda dun, and had (still have) the satisfaction of a job well done.

Go ferrit.

Sounds like the estimator's math is as bad as yours. Get another quote, or 10.

Or the guy just really doesn't need the work right now. In my experience, when a contractor doesn't need the work they bid the job very high... even up to two to three times higher than normal. If the customer bites, they sub it out and still make out like a bandit.

$10K? That's absolutely insane. The hardest part about the entire project will be the duct work on the furnace. Most homeowners don't have the tools you'd need for that.

My electric 40 gallon WH ran ~250 bux at HomoDespot....installed it myself in about 2 hrs.....I cheat though...I have brass flex pipes, so on/off in a second, the silly draining was the hard part, what with all the crap in the bottom.....

Boiler for home heating?? hot water circulation system??....

Air to air heat pump and fuel fired units
that used to price out at $1500-2000 a ton are now $3000 or more per ton
Water sourced units (geothermal) are now $6000+ a ton
And that does not include the deep well loops
I had to negotiate the crap out of a current geothermal project to get to $6000
It helped that the project has over 20 tons

HVAC installs have now surpassed
Electric and plumbing as a per sq ft basis in a home
And MEP costs in general are way up.

There are theories why
Some are conspiratorial
