Chris Radek is an excellent watchmaker. His website is Timeguy.com
I just had him service my Speedmaster Profesional Moonwatch. Great job! His prices are listed right on the website. Yours should come in around $280-300. |

The Submariner date went to a sapphire crystal in 1979. The only Submariner with a plastic crystal by 1988 was the no date Sub. So if your watch is a 1988 and it still had an acrylic crystal, it was either a no date Sub, or you had a sapphire crystal.

I recently had my GMT serviced at an AD. Typical crap, including a new crystal which had a ding in it that drove me nuts. $1k.

I honestly have no idea why people take their Rolex watches to an authorized dealer for service. All they are going to do is send it to Rolex and tack on a service charge. I always take my Rolex watches (or send) directly to Rolex USA and I only pay Rolex and save hundreds on the service fee.

So just an interesting follow up...
Quote:
Just passing along what he said. I don't know if he's full of shit or not, because I've been doing business with this jeweler for well over 20 years and they've always been reputable. Just...interesting. Anyway...I think I've found a watch repair place locally that specializes in Movado. I called the guy and he knew exactly what kind of watch it was and said a service will be nowhere near $1100. |

No offense, but you should find a place that specializes in mechanical watches, specifically able to work on a Valjoux 7750 movement. I would be leery of any watchmaker who specialized in Movado watches. Expect a high quote.

None taken. The reason I called is because he had 15 5-star yelp reviews and one actually said the he repaired 3 Movados for them. I'll let him quote me and see how it looks.

So here's an update...
Found a place in Arlington (about 10 miles from me) that had 156 positive reviews and 5 stars on Yelp. Took it in and the guy fixed my watch and polished it to like new for $400. He knew everything about the watch. The problem with the date advance was a tooth that broke off a gear (which he returned to me). Reason? Just like NOX said...should not have the date change at midnight. How about that?
Also...NOX: You were correct. It has a Valjoux 7750 although he called it an ETA 7750 movement. ETA acquired Valjoux, so essentially the same item. He spent ten minutes talking about the movement...8 more than I needed to know, but he was such a nice guy, I let him go on. He did tell me that all the leading watches use this movement so I have a really great watch. |
