I guess Columbia university doesn’t like trump either

Yep.... it’s just like the flu

Coronavirus damages not only the lungs, but also the kidneys, liver, heart, brain and nervous system, skin and gastrointestinal tract, doctors noted Friday in a review of reports about patients.

The team at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City — one of the hospitals flooded with patients in the spring – went through their own experiences and collected reports from other medical teams around the world.

Their comprehensive picture shows coronavirus attacks virtually every major system in the human body, directly damaging organs and causing the blood to clot, the heart to lose its healthy rhythm, the kidneys to shed blood and protein, and the skin to erupt in rashes. It causes headaches, dizziness, muscle aches, stomach pain and other symptoms, along with classic respiratory symptoms such as coughing and fever.

"Physicians need to think of COVID-19 as a multisystem disease," Dr. Aakriti Gupta, a cardiology fellow at Columbia who worked on the review, said in a statement. "There's a lot of news about clotting but it's also important to understand that a substantial proportion of these patients suffer kidney, heart, and brain damage, and physicians need to treat those conditions along with the respiratory disease."
More details: Much of the damage wrought by the virus appears to come because of its affinity for a receptor — a kind of molecular doorway into cells – called ACE2. Cells lining the blood vessels, in the kidneys, the liver ducts, the pancreas, in the intestinal tract and lining the respiratory tract are all covered with ACE2 receptors, which the virus can use to grapple and infect cells, the Columbia team wrote in the review, published in the journal Nature Medicine.

“These findings suggest that multiple-organ injury may occur at least in part due to direct viral tissue damage,” the team wrote.

Both examples are not applicable. I have a Master's degree in statistics, so I strongly believe what is statistically proven is true in real life. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of studies that have shown beyond all possible doubt that increased death rates from drinking and driving and smoking tobacco are not only highly correlated, but that causation has been established. As a result, I don't drink and drive, nor do I smoke anything.
These are behaviors avoided, which is a lot easier than behaviors one chooses to exhibit. It has also been statistically proven that controlling my hypertension extends my life expectancy, so I take the pills and jump through all the hoops associated therewith, so I have no problem exhibiting behaviors that I believe are good for me.

Show me the same for wearing a bandana over my face and I'll change my mind instantly.

Interesting that on my Facebook feed this morning there are TWO references to the safety of seat belts. Seat belt wearing has not been an issue for a very long time, but it came up twice in one morning. I recall making the seat belt comparison here and it would appear I was right. One comment even said "this is kind of like masks". My take-away is that, much like Fauci, who introduces the latest addition to his doom and gloom in bite sized pieces, we are inching toward actual laws on the books that will demand masks.

My crystal ball says that just like the pollen index, the "feels like" temperatures, the terrorist threat levels, we can expect weeks of the news telling us "remember folks, there is a mask level 3 in place so remember to take your masks when you head out today".

I am seeing ads on TV for masks and just just like they did with gays, trans, etc. we'll get it shoved in our faces until we are de-sensitized to it and we wear them just like we do a seat belt and the generation being born now will only have the stories of the days when we didn't wear masks. "Grandma/pa, is it true that when you were younger you went everywhere without a mask?" "We sure did Billy...but that was before commu...I mean "socialism"" You would have really loved it then. I have pictures. Do you want to see?"

We'll have masks on the red carpet, masks on wedding shows, masks on the Bachelor, masks on sitcoms to try to make it humorous, mask jokes, mask give-aways, airline masks, cruise masks, school masks, formal masks, sport masks, you name it.

Buckle up folks.

This is an NPR article. there are NUMEROUS cited studies showing efficacy of masks.

I keep posting actual data and studies, not opinion pieces.

I encourage any debating my pro-mask stance, to post up a legitimate study showing that masks DO NOT WORK. I keep hearing, show me, prove it.... I do, but the naysayers cannot do the same. All they do is post opinion pieces that do not hold debate vale.

I remember having these exact conversations with gay men about wearing condoms or (gasp) abstinence with concern of AIDS/HIV.

Their brilliant arguments: sex doesn't feel good with a condom, how do we know condoms work, this AIDS thing is just scare tactics by the conservatives to try to get gay men not to have sex..... OH the irony!

Lucky for the gays, they now have a preventative daily pill to prevent HIV, so now they again have an excuse not to cover their wanker.

You are failing to understand that my position is two-fold. Yes, I am certain a bandanna is not a life saving piece of 99 cent material, but on top of that, the disease is killing people, yes, but it is going to get, or not get you. Just like any disease. Treat the sufferers. Let it go. Move on. Hospitals running at 104% is a HOSPITAL issue not a societal issue. When we had a shortage of toilet paper, we got punched, and then MADE MORE. When we ran out of hand sanitizer, we MADE MORE. When a business repeatedly has a line outside, they EXPAND. It's pretty simple. Re-allocate existing resources, motivate people to re-direct their medical talents, buy more equipment...we already know COVID pays better than other illnesses. Move elective surgeries out of hospitals permanently. Aunt Martha can get her nose job outside the metro system.

There are THOUSANDS of solutions for the excuses I am sick of hearing. One solution I don't find acceptable is having the country limping along wrapped in bandages and shackles both.

A death from a car accident, AIDS, muscular dystrophy, old age, a shooting/stabbing, cancer, etc is a tough loss, but it will continue to happen. Death is an absolute and until we are going to remove GREATER causes of death that are VOLUNTARY, we need to stop fkng around and move down the road. Put this behind us. People have watched too many seasons of Walking Dead and think that's where we are going.

WE PEOPLE do not have to accept this as new normal. It is NOT normal and never will be.

Good comparison. What is the incidence of HIV/AIDS currently and do you think condom use among gays is as prevalent now as it was in the height of the AIDS scare?

Again, prevention is key. I am not FOR shutting everything down, the way around that is to accept masks as a norm (FOR NOW).

Stop passing the $$$$, I clearly asked that any on here that are anti mask, post up a study saying that masks (not bandanas) DO NOT WORK. Still waiting.

Well, AIDS was discovered in 1983, at that time we did not have a good grasp on how exactly it was transmitted or who was highest risk. Mortality rates are significantly lower now (in USA), we will not discuss other countries (Africa).

Lower in USA due to multi drug treatments and now preventative medications. NOT due to responsible condom use. Starting to see a common denominator here..... MEN seem to have a hard tome following directions.

Only took 37 years to get to this point
