talk to Needspeed, he's been running BannedCamp on his home pc with a DSL connection for several years. It can be pretty cheap.

Yep, it is cheapest to host one from your house , but hosting can be very cheap as well depending on your needs.
You can get URLs for about $10/yr. DNS service maybe $25/yr. Hosting can be as cheap as $3-5/mo. Depends on what you want to put up. And I've upgraded from DSL to UVerse thank you very much |

If you just want to put an advertising front up and direct people to a business, then it's simple. Once you start wanting to take money or get interactive is when the difficulty starts to go up.
You could always start simple and work your way up. |

Asking how expensive a website is is like asking how much a car costs.....it depends.

Very true. Just don't let anyone try to tell you that the only possible way you are ever going to be successful is to have some high paid graphic "artist" who thinks he knows your business and market better than you do design it for you. There are plenty of well qualified people out there who are very capable of working with you to put together a good quality, successful site without having to spend a ton of money. Not to mention the aggravation saved by not dealing with some arrogant know-it-all.

But it ain't just about art. The challenge is finding a good programming guy who can make it look good and knows how to design an interface that doesn't confuse people. But a really good designer working with a really good programmer is priceless. I have a really good resource for Joomla and Drupal development and he's cheap starting around $5K. www.safarimultimedia.com (check out his site...) $5K?! you scream.... I want a site for $250! Can you get a site cheap? Sure. Do you get what you pay for. Sure. Are all artists arrogant know it all assholes? Hardly. Do some professionals know your business better than you. Sometimes. Keep in mind, people who do this stuff professionally, have worked with hundreds of businesses, built hundreds of web sites, created strategies, seen every problem there is and know how to make things happen. The key is choosing the right ones. A track record of success is the only way to know. This goes for techie assholes, artist assholes, consultant assholes, et. al., who think they know your business better than you also. If you are starting a business, just putting up a web site is a tiny fraction of what will make it successful (i.e., revenue and profit). You'll need:
and a lot of time and energy. Personally I wouldn't hire anyone who didn't know my business better than me. That's what I'm paying for. |

Yeah, but for a few hundred you can throw up a nice site from a template and accomplish what most small businesses need.

Finding somebody who meets all the qualifications for the specific business website design is one thing. But anybody who claims they know more about your product and market without any direct hands on knowledge of your product is the type of shyster I would stay as far away from as possible. Maybe if you're selling "As seen on TV" type of products that might be an exception, but a person purchasing any product or service that requires in depth technical knowledge for example, isn't likely going to give the time of day to a company whose site is clearly lacking in product knowledge. I would think it would be pretty rare to find a website designer who knows more about the specific product that the person who invented it or has spent years as a professional in his trade. I know I would have a hard time working with somebody who arrogantly thinks they can just come in and tell me more about my business than I know.

That's true, but most people that want a website can't provide enough content for a simple single page.

The process for marketing and strategy is the same. A good professional should have a process to get the specific details from the client quickly. Their true value is assimilating the clients knowledge with their knowledge. Web designers shouldn't be creating your in depth product information anyway. There are technical writers who can do that. Most technical people can't write to save their lives. Taking their raw input and making it understandable is their value. You don't really think that selling a tech product is all about barfing a ton of technical info on a web site do you? You seem to have had bad experiences with professional services people. Most of the really qualified people I know are actually very humble and really care about their client's success. Not sure why you assume specialized knowledge equals arrogance. |
