Default C6 Windshield replacment

Have any of you C6'rs had to replace your windshields yet?

My neighbor was at a family function and her windshield was hit by a softball. It hit, broke and spider webbed out on the passengers side near the frame.

I've been helping her look around to find a replacement and or quote to have a new one installed.

Not much online. Found one windshield on ebay for $449. Looking for a Windshield W/o HUD, and W/ GPS antenna

Checked some of the catalog places. None of them had windshields, just wipers and such.

any advice would be helpful, Thanks!

No insurance? I would not even contemplate finding a windshield and doing it myself. The seal around the window has to be perfect and all the old adhesive must be removed before the new is applied. Otherwise, there is a strong chance that it will leak. I would and I have gone to an auto glass replacement outfit. They have the tools and the know-how. They ate the deductable and they guaranteed their work.

Even if you don't go through insurance, I'd still go to one of the insurance rated places, just let them know it's out of pocket, they'll probably work with her (plus she can work that smile of hers!)

Here's some places near there:

She has insurance but we were looking around to see what a new windshield cost to get a better idea of what is a good deal on a quote, and what is out to lunch as far as prices!

She has one quote so far a little under $500 installed.

This was already over a year ago, but I got one for $350+ or so installed...it is the no-frills 2005 C6 glass (by PPG) for no HUD and no On-Star antenna mount or blackout for said antenna box.

'05's had on-star as optional so base glass exists. I had already removed my onstar gizmo and threw it in the back because they kept calling me to sell me service! didn't need the man tracking my movements anyways.

If you really need it- i can dig up the reciept to see if there is a p/n.

Whatever she does, make sure she does NOT let the installer use one of those piano wire with a wench thingy to remove the old glass. It most likely will catch the dash cover under the front of the windshield and damage it. The dash cover is PERMANENTLY attached to the dash and it will require the entire dash to be replaced.
Don't ask me how I know.

BTW my replacement was about $1000 charged to the insurance but really only costs about $500. They gave me the real invoice by mistake.
Call the dealer and ask who they recommend. Stay away from large chain windshield glass stores. YMMV.

Good to know. Who did the replacement, dealer or auto glass place?

My friend had an auto glass company come do hers. $400 or so. They guy that came out had done Corvettes before but not a C6. Everything was good. Her Vette was not damaged in the repair!

Had my windshield replaced by SafeLite. In and out in under an hour. They did a great job removing & replacing the glass. I have NAV/HUD/ON-STAR so the glass was around $800 including install, but my insurance covered it.

Did it make you cringe when they used the tool that made a horrible noise to unseal/cut the window out?

She said I would have not done well and cringed at the noise it made!

Just be aware the GPS they are talking about is Onstar, not the factory GPS.

As you are aware, Cars equipped with a HUD have a different windshield. The windshield has a layer of reflective film laminated between the two layers of safety glass. Additionally, the HUD windshield is .3mm thicker at the base and tapered toward the top. This taper is designed to set the focal point of the HUD precisely in the area where the projector projects the HUD image on the glass. The C5 owners originally, and now the C6 owners, were fond of adding a Hud to vehicles that did not have one and most of us did it without adding the special windshield. This will give you a 90% solution. There will be some circumstances that without the film the hud image isn't as bright and some direct sunlight situations where it will not be visible. Otherise you can't quite tell the difference.

The Onstar antenna is referred to as a digital navigation antenna but it has nothing to do with your navigation radio. It does have to do with Onstar's ability to know where your car is. The box will transfer but the bracket is permenantly attached to the windshield.

The parts are as follows:

C6 Corvette

Windshield without UE1 (Onstar) without UV6 (HUD) 25821509 List $ 521.18

Windshield with UV6 (HUD) without UE1 (onstar) 25821510 List$1,302.97

Windshield with everything (HUD and onstar) 15778613 List $946.79

Z06 is also specific if it has Onstar or not, but HUD is a given.

Hope that helps.

i own an insurance damage appraisal company. please guys, never go shopping for glass unless you have no insurance. the price to insurance companies runs between 40 and 70% off nags price. trust me, they don't pay what the glass companies quote you. some windshields are less that your deductable to the insurance company. you should call your insurance company and lower your deductable to $100.00 or less, you will be shocked at how cheap that really is.

to find an oem w/s always check with safelite, they do 80% of the insurance claims in the country and always have oem glass. and don't ever think chevrolet makes their own glass, it all comes from a vendor like ppg, or carlite.
