Seems he was a real piece of work. Or, per the attachments a piece of sh^% as written by President Reagan's chief aide during he and the queen's visit to the Reagan Ranch during his presidency. I only included a couple of pages - but, he details another scenario on the same state visit most stands out - seems, when he (Reagan's aid who was in charge of the state visit) slipped into the queen/prince's stretch limo during a sudden thunderous California downpour all he got were dagger-like looks from the prince as if he, the host who arranged everything to make them comfortable were an unwelcome intruder in the vehicle. My opinion of the prince has not recovered since reading that excellent `behind the scenes' book.

I never heard the Reagan anecdote before. I give Phillip props for serving in the British Navy in both theaters, during WWII. If you were on a ship, you were just as likely to buy it as any other sailor. He wasn't an armchair warrior.

Don't give a shit about the royalty aspect, though. Stopped caring about that in 1776.

Copy/paste from the other place.

What did Prince Philip do in the War?
Philip joined the Navy as a cadet after leaving Gordonstoun School in 1939 and went on to train as an officer at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon.

He was given his first posting in January 1940 as a midshipman on battleship HMS Ramillies, and tasked with protecting convoys of the Australian Expeditionary Force in the Indian Ocean.

Prince Philip then transferred to the Mediterranean Fleet in October 1940 following the invasion of Greece.

He served onboard the HMS Valiant and was involved in the battle of Crete – which saw dozens of Royal Navy ships sunk or damaged.

During this time he was mentioned in dispatches for his service during the Battle of Cape Matapan, in which he controlled the battleship’s searchlights.

Then in July 1943, at the age of just 22, he was credited with saving the HMS Wallace which came under heavy bombardment during the invasion of Sicily.

To confuse the German bombers which were attacking the ship at night, he devised a plan to launch a raft with smoke floats that successfully distracted them.

Speaking to The Observer in 2003, Harry Hargreaves, one of the Wallace‘s crew, said: “Prince Philip saved our lives that night.

“I suppose there might have been a few survivors, but certainly the ship would have been sunk. He was always very courageous and resourceful and thought very quickly.”

After victory in Europe in 1944, Philip moved to the British fleet in the Pacific and he was present during the signing of the Japanese surrender the following year.

Post-war naval service
After the war, Philip worked as an instructor at the Navy’s leadership training establishment -HMS Royal Arthur in Wiltshire.

He married the Queen in 1947 and, after his honeymoon, returned to the Navy in a desk job at the Admiralty, and then at the Naval Staff College, Greenwich.

Philip was again posted to the Mediterranean in 1949, this time to Malta as the first lieutenant of the destroyer HMS Chequers.

Promotions followed in the next couple of years, and by the time he left the Navy in 1952 he had achieved the rank of commander.

He later gained a slew of honorary military titles, including becoming a five-star Admiral of the Fleet in the Navy on Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne in 1953, the highest available position in the military branch.

Also from the other place, posted by an English gent.

Harry and Meghan are no longer royalty. Most people here were glad to see the back of them. Although sorry we had to inflict them on you lot, but Meghan was yours to start with

And as for worshiping royalty, it seems most Americans treat their politicians the same way. Which to us is odd because most politicians, good or bad, are scoundrels.

More to the point, the chap was a long serving veteran, never afraid to speak his mind, a VERY keen sportsman and shooter, and also did more things to support the community than any politician or celebrity than I can think of. For example, over 20,000 unveiling events etc. That's an average of one a day for 60 years.

And lets not forget the money. The Royal Estate pays all profits to the Treasury. In exchange the Treasury gives the Royal's a grant of normally 15%. Most left wing media here just focuses on the 15% handout and balls them spongers. What they really are is a wealthy family that pays 85% income tax while also doing a huge amount of community service, more so than other wealthy tyres I could name.

So here's to a good chap who made a good innings, I wish we had more like him.

The opposite is true, Elizabeth fell for him. Most women were attracted to him. Philip was manly, he was tall and handsome and had a charming personality.

Back in the USA. Four Star Army General William Westmoreland , ditto, the same situation.

"Westmoreland first met his future wife, Katherine (Kitsy) Stevens Van Deusen, while stationed at Fort Sill; she was nine years old at the time and was the daughter of the post executive officer, Colonel Edwin R. Van Deusen. Westmoreland met her again in North Carolina when she was nineteen and a student at University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The couple married in May 1947."

She told him as a mere child that she would marry him someday and he laughed it away. She did and they had a lifelong marriage.

Another cut/paste from the other place.

"Before he married up, the man was a Veteran of naval battles between battleships and cruisers in WW2, served in both European and Japanese Theater's, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was assigned a Naval command on his own merit before he was 30 and held a Master's License to Captain ships. He had over 5000 flight hours logged as a Pilot or Copilot and held ratings to fly over 300 different types of aircraft, including multi-engine and jet aircraft. He lived a life of fast cars, fast horses, and fast airplanes in an era when they often proved deadly. He married into money but also lived a life balanced between the responsibilities of royalty and the need for adventure. Not many men can live a full life like that and keep a family.

We hear a lot about people who marry rich and spend money like water, who never accomplish much more on their own merit other than bragging (John Kerry comes to mind), and Prince Phillip was not one of those braggarts."
