Default Cities are starting to ban...

new gas stations.

Petaluma, California, has voted to outlaw new gas stations, the first of what climate activists hope will be numerous cities and counties to do so.

Why it matters: Expect more such ordinances, particularly in liberal towns. Grassroots groups are popping up with the mission of spreading this type of ban and forcing pollution cleanups at existing gas stations.

The movement aims to accelerate the shift to electric vehicles.
"This is not a ban on the existing gas stations, which are providing all the gas currently needed," Matt Krogh, U.S. oil and gas campaign director for the environmental group Stand.earth, tells Axios.

Driving the news: In Petaluma — where neighborhood opposition to a new Safeway gas station prompted years of litigation — the council voted unanimously last week to move forward with a permanent ban on new stations; a final vote will happen Monday.

Existing stations won't be allowed to add new gas pumps, though they're encouraged to build electric charging bays.
"The city of roughly 60,000 people is host to 16 operational gas stations, and city staff concluded there are multiple stations located within a 5-minute drive of every planned or existing residence within city limits," per the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
The city councilor who introduced the measure, D’Lynda Fischer, is quoted as saying: “The goal here is to move away from fossil fuels and to make it as easy as possible to do that.”

I've got no problem with liberal towns cutting their own throats when it comes to a gasoline supply. I advocate cars having a "City Permit Sticker" on them that only allows residents of a community to buy gas there....for all the surrounding cities.

That's too bad for Petaluma. Safeway sells the cheapest gas anywhere there isn't Costco gas.

I went to Petaluma for many years. In early 80’s a farming town -> then high tech

Watched it deteriorate for 20 yrs with onslaught from Marin County and the Bay Area

Use to smell like cow shit and hard working people which was displaced by vineyards. A lifestyle to never be seen again out there

Don't be too sure. Texas came uncomfortably close to electing Mr. Hell Yes We're Going to Take Your AR-15 to the US Senate. Never say never.

Wait. Whut? You mean banning new offshore drilling, canceling pipelines, threatening fracking, and harassing the oil and gas industry leads to higher energy prices? I would never have seen this coming. But don't forget about the benefits of becoming dependent on foreign oil again.

Gas is up almost 30 cents here lately. About 25 bucks extra a month at one tank a week.
Trip this weekend should cost an extra 50 easy.

Save offshore for later when oil gets harder to find. Ditto leases in what until this point has been true wilderness. Energy production ****s up every area it is involved in and I believe we should try and save some wild areas until it is necessary to destroy them in the interest of gasoline which is still cheaper than bottled water.

Stupid analogy. You don't need 20 gallons of drinking water every week. Beer is also cheaper than water. All that means is that water is over priced. You want to make a real difference? Stop banning Stupid things like straws and ban plastic water bottles.
