Default Santa Ana Bans Short-Term Rentals

The stated reason is to "preserve the character of neighborhoods." Anyone who has actually been to Santa Ana knows it's a gang-infested shithole where many houses are rented out to 5+ wetback families and front lawns are covered with parked vehicles. But oh noes, Airbnb is the problem.

If something defies common sense and decency, the Kommies out in Kommiefornia will make it happen.

The rather stately area of Saratoga Springs NY, officials are rattling sabers about jumping into the rental issues that affects that place. Proposing all sorts of rules and fees because of perceived problems at many of the rental spots. (long noisy parties, parking problems Etc)

For people that do not know the name, Saratoga is big with the thoroughbred horse racing set! Serious money involved!

We're a very short walk to the beach. Zoning prohibits short term rentals. We wouldn't have bought the house if it was zoned differently.

Yep. I agree. Residential is Residential. Not zoned to be a small motel for transient visitors.

I lived there for 8 years. It wasnt an airbnb until the last two years I lived there. The house sold and the new owners did it. I moved partially because of that. Glad I did because they built another one right next to it!

Broad Brush Phred. I've been to Santa Ana 1000x more than you and have lived there. Santa Ana has over 300K people in it and has bad areas that are mostly in one area. They also have nice area's with expensive homes well over a million dollars. Pick most any city with over 300k and tell me they have no bad area's. You would think a guy from Shitcago would think any city was a paradise compared to that actual shithole he grew up in.

It can change. I know this for a fact because I experienced it myself.
I do agree with you though. We left the coast party because of the rentals and tourism.

Yeah, zoning can change. We also have an HOA (pretty laid back with only 80 houses on a dead end street) with a Covenant that prohibits rentals shorter than 6 months. This island has done a great job preserving dunes, open spaces, not allowing high-rise condos, etc. Hopefully that continues.

John Grisham bought two lots on the beach a few years ago. He went to the city asking for permission to combine them into one and permission to build higher than the 30 ft limit. City said sorry, we don't care who you are or how much money you have, the answer is no.

Famously lacking in zoning Houston seems to have a problem with some of the AirB&B homes being used as party locations over and over. I've seen that covered on the news lately. You'd think the property owners wouldn't want big parties in their units, because the propensity for property damage would be very high.

Phred is so FOS. Most of the Mexican's live in Apts so it's tough to park a car on the lawn which is a violation in Orange County.

Let's talk about the feral animals who live across the street from me, then.

This is SoCal - even the shitholes with landscaper pickup trucks parked all over the front lawn are worth > $1 million. Yes, there are pockets of nice old homes here and there in Santa Ana, but they are small islands in a sea of effluent. ICNLT.

Seems easy enough to work around.

Rent the house for $1200.00 for the year. Evict the new tenant each week.

When I first moved to SoCal I took a little tour around the area. I was actually leaning towards one of the cheaper cities like Santa Ana or Costa Mesa because, well, they were cheaper. But as I drove around I discovered there was a reason for that.

But getting back to the main topic of this thread, do you agree or disagree that short-term rentals like VRBO and Airbnb are the #1 problem facing the residents of Santa Ana?
