Wet sanded clear today. Perfect shooting day for lacquer. Got one pass of the sprayer and a big ol’ line pops up. Then I had to touch it. Gahhhh. Now I have to wait 24 hours to sand that part. My guess is I swiped something across there and it made an almost imperceptible scratch.

When the new lacquer hit it made a ridge. I’ll sand it out but I lose a day.

Oh hell. I went ahead and sprayed the back amd just checked it. Total mess. Even though I cleaned it really well it looks like sanding slurry blotches. ****. Now I have to sand the entire thing and start that layer over. I’m going to change to mineral spirits for sanding lube. I think the hazing might be from moisture. I should have let it dry longer after cleaning. Man, I can be stupid.

I learned how to lay down glass like lacquer working for my dads cabinet shop. Hundreds of kitchens. Heated, airless system. This is a bit harder with aerosol cans and my stupid.

Step off from the aerosols and regroup. Let everything dry for a week so it is flashed off completely, then resand and respray. Your last coat looks to be a "double" so it will take some time for the trapped solvents to leave the work. If you rush things now you are at risk of cloudiness and sand scratch swelling from applying wet heavy coats over a substrate which is not fully dry. Use the time to sand, raise grain and resand the neck all the way to 1500 so it is as smooth as a baby's ass and has that warm glow that really tight grained wood gets.

A week!

Can says 24 hours to sand. But I do agree. It has quite a few coats on it already. Needs to flash, then I’ll remove that last coat. Wait another day, then spray. The work area is quite warm too and no way to use reducers.

Just have to wait. Damnit. I don’t have the neck yet. It’s finish will be quite different.

When I get a new hard maple pool cue shaft I treat it to a sanding starting with 400 grit and progressing grit by grit to 1500. Final finish is provided by rubbing the oils from my fingers into the surface for a couple days then buffing with a piece of table felt. Maintenance includes a finger massage followed by either a clean cotton tee shirt rub or if it feels odd a vigorous buff with felt. Even sweaty mitts slide well after this treatment!

I’ve heard of similar finishing techniques on necks. I’m going to use some of the tinted clear to age it, then shoot clear on the fretboard and headstock. I’ll likely sand the back of the neck to a satin finish. My current strat has no finish on the back of the neck. My LP is just worn off on the back of the neck.

My hand sticks to slick lacquered necks from sweating. I’ve learned to rough it up a little with 400 grit. Works for me.

Getting some nice build up of clear. Sanding with 2000 grit now.

It’s a little darker than I planned but buffing and sanding may lighten a bit. Now I need a name.

I’m thinking of getting a decal made that says Definistrator. (To throw out a window). That’s also the name of one of Greg’s albums and the design is really his - electronics, neck profile, frets...

It may be darker than what you planned but it's a warm color. I like it.

The color coat is actually clear with a touch of amber. The dark is from the number of coats. I suppose I could have shot less color but I do like the warmth. It will look different with chrome hardware, pick guard, light maple neck.

Sprayed last coat of lacquer. I think that’s eight coats. Last two were heavy. No runs! I need to save enough tint amd clear for the neck that should be here any day now.

Next, I’ll wet sand with mineral spirits as lube. 1000, 2000, 3000 grits with sanding block. Then buff with compound, then polish, then wax.

Most of that lacquer will get removed. You don’t want it too thick for sound purposes. I put a lot on so I have a margin of error sanding and buffing.

Tomorrow I drop off the hardware for laser etching. It looks pretty shiny but has some orange peel.

Might have to do the pick guard over. It doesn’t seem to fit correctly because it’s cheap Chinese shit.
