Unhappy [Emergency vet visit] Cosmo had an owie today...

So this AM I let Cosmo out off the deck through the sliding door...there is a screen I pull closed while I make his breakfast/wait for him to return. Finished getting his bowl of food ready only to look outside and find bloody paw prints all over the deck.

Upon closer examination he was bleeding profusely from one of his front paws, and saw that one of his claws was missing. Trying not to panic, I got a pail of warm water and washed his paw the best I could, and wrapped it. Twice. And both times he managed to lose the dressing.

I get him to the vet, and they took a look at it, shaved the fur back from the wound, cleaned it some more, wrapped it, and sent us home with some antibiotics...luckily he should be OK, apparently a fairly common injury (although first time it's ever happened to any of my dogs).

After cleaning up the 'crime scene' on my deck, I found the claw...he pulled it clean out, probably got caught between a couple of deck boards. This was a blessing in disguise, as if it only was partial, they said they would have had to extricate the rest of it at the vet. We'll be going outside through the walk out basement slider from now on.

Glad the day is over...this scared the absolute crap out of me...

Awww.

Do you think he'll need an Elizabethan collar to keep the bandage in place?

Poor guy.

My dad's Golden Retriever just lost a k-9 tooth. He said that the dog came home with the tooth dangling, so he ran him up to the vet and they finished the job. My dad has the tooth in a jar. Big 'ol thing. The dog doesn't seem to be any worse for the wear because of it, he can still woof down a mountain of dogfood in about half a second. No idea of what happened. Got it hung up on something somewhere.

They actually want me to take it off today...he is on antibiotics and the bleeding has stopped.

It is pretty 'fashionable' though

Glad to hear it wasn't too bad for Cosmo

Levi cut his pad and had it wrapped like that for about a week. Of course it was spring time and everything was wet outside. We used an IV bag as a bootie to keep his bandage dry. Yeah, he loved that

Glad he’s on the mend. Our one cat did something similar several months ago, the nail is growing back but very slowly

Thanks all for the concern and well wishes he didn't even cry when it happened, just blood everywhere seeing that quantity of it really scared the heck out of me.

Ohhh, I'm sure he did!

Coz managed to slip out of my first 2 wrapping attempts before we hopped into the car to go to the vet. Finally I gave up and just put a towel down in the car and headed out. Amazingly by the time we got to the vet it had mostly stopped bleeding and he was already putting weight on it.

I told Cosmo he was going to send me to an early grave if he keeps this sheit up.
