if you want to go off-topic in a hurry, mentioning something with the word 'walmart' in it will usually do the trick also.

So it should go something like this....
"I went in to Wal-Mart, and the sheep were trying to organize a union....." That should cover all the bases |

No, that a free pass to hell and accomplishes her dreams.
Tell me which man wanted marriage? Do women like football? But, they put up with it. Same shit but, football and hookers are cheaper. |

I was a Teamster for 26 years, worked for UPS. You never see UPS men standing around, there always moving getting the job done.. I do have to agree with you about some of the Union workers..They take advantage of companys because of being in the Union. I can't speak for them, but I do know if you don't do your job at UPS you won't be there long.....WW
And, as Forrest Gump said.. "That's all I have to say about that"... |

Thanks for asking and welcome to the Jon Hekking Institute of Higher Education's course; UNIONS 101
In preparation for today's lecture, please refer to the chart below; So, let's discuss what this chart is telling us. You will see that union membership has dropped from a high of 32% in 1948 to an all time low of 11.9% of total US workers in 2010. That number is projected to be at approx 9% by the end of 2011. What does this tell us? Well, if you ask a union leader they will tell you it's the result of the employer's attempt to break the unions and making it more difficult for an employee to become a union member. Is this the reality? No, it certainly is not. The reality is that the majority of the 20% of jobs that have been lost by union members NO LONGER EXIST IN THE US period. These jobs were with companies that have either closed shop or sent their jobs to Mexico and China so they can still compete in the world market. It is almost impossible to manufacture any goods in the US and remain profitable and competitive due to US labor costs as driven up by the unions. You may ask "what about GM, they have a union and have become profitable again". This is true, but at who's expense? The lovely Mrs. JH works for a company that tracks profitability statements for dealerships as well as conducts profitability clinics. Ask your local Chevrolet, Caddy, GMC, Buick, Oldsmobile (oops, never mind), Pontiac (again forget that one), Saturn (yea them too) or Hummer (egads, them too) dealership how much they make these days. GM has become profitable by taking margin away from their dealers and dumping manufacturing expenses by closing divisions, the unions have contributed nothing and in fact their members are still earning severance from all those closed divisions along with huge pensions that the general public will never see. Also, now that GM is making a profit, how long do you think it will be before the unions demand ANOTHER wage increase to get their share? Keep in mind that the average hourly wage at GM is $72 per hour compared to $41 per hour at Honda, Toyota, and Ford US plants. How long will GM stay profitable with numbers like these? There will always be a place for unions in jobs that involve public safety and high risk such as law enforcement, fire fighting and pilots. However, the days of organized union labor in manufacturing in the US are long gone. You don't need a degree in Economics as I have to see that. This concludes our lecture for today. For transcripts, please send $10, US dollars only, no Barn Bucks or Canadian currency. PM me for the address. |
