Default Marco's Stablemate

Marco's new stablemate....

Well gents, here's why I missed the thread about Sweetsie getting sodomized by a gay tweaker....

This followed me home today. On a flatbed, mind you, but it followed me home. 1970 Mustang Mach 1. 351W, auto. Car has sat for 7 years now. Was owned by a buddy of mine who has too many projects going on. He bought it in '04, put on new Magnum 500 wheels and tires, new windshield, slats and wing. He then parked it, and it has sat.

So......the fuel is beyond rotten, so we pinched off the fuel line, shot a little fresh gas down the intake, put a battery in it and twisted the key. Nothing.

Tightened the loose cable on the solenoid, hit the key again, and she roared to life....for a while anyway. Keeping up with V8 demands with a squirt bottle is a losing battle. But she runs!

Car will need a lot....but check this out. Southwest car....95% rust free. Body is very straight, but will need minor repair and paint. Interior needs updating. But I paid $4500 for a very solid Mach 1. Price them on eBay....driver quality cars are going for $12-$15K. Rust bucket rollers for upwards of $7K. This one is worth rehabbing.

And yes....of course I have pics for you.

More to follow.....been a long day. Time for a ca....uh....I mean dog nap.

Friz, this is a great project. What makes even greater is the aftermarket and OEM parts for those cars is huge.

I assume you have plans for it, let us hear it, I assume you are going to get rid of that auto and stick a 5 speed.

Whats the 'Stang's name?

Outstanding, I spent 3 or 4 years restoring mustangs, that's a great find. These are very easy restorations, you'll have a blast!

Pete....I haven't named her yet. I'm sure something will strike me. I'll probably leave it auto, will just be a cruiser and that way the Mrs. (who has already taken a liking to it) can drive it too.

Jon....I may lean on you for advice during the build. What I have gotten is reverse sticker shock on parts. Example.....fuel sending unit for Corvette $300. Fuel sending unit for Mustang, $40. AND....no EFI, no computers, no ABS, no VATS, no bullshit. A straight on simple car. Compared to the Vettes and Fieros, this thing is a cakewalk to wrench on.

I need to drain the old fuel and flush the lines first. The old fuel REEKS. Extremely stale. There are a lot of little issues....it has full length headers and the wrong plug wires....one is straight boot and is sitting on a header, needs a 45 degree boot. It has NO brakes....if I pump them, I get some pressure (temporarily)...so the master cylinder is shot. But really, those two things are all that stands between me and driving it at least down the block. Once it's running good, over to Basera's body shop for repair and paint. Will do interior kit myself. Goal is 2-3 years to get it sorted.

I don't know how healthy the engine is yet, but it ran and no smoke in the garage. Good sign.

I've always wanted one of these....not getting any younger, time to scratch the itch.

Nice car, the Mustangs of that era were my favorites. I know what you mean about the price of these cars, I have looked at them online and decided to just be happy with what I have for now........WW

Once again, I'm jealous. Great find. My son just bought a newer Stang and we kid him for owning a "Rustang". But seriously I've always liked them but never owned one. The rumble of a Mustang is one of the best. Have fun.

Good find!

I have a friend that has had a blue '70 Mach 1 sitting in his yard for about 10 years now. He refuses to sell it and seems to have no desire to fix it. Good to see this one going to a good home and getting redone.

Awesome Friz. The 1970 was the absolute pinnacle of the Mustang in my opinion. I can still to this day, remember looking at some car magazine in 1970 and seeing the Mustangs in yellow lined up on the page which also included the Boss's as well. When I saw your pics, that image came immediately back to me. Enjoy it my friend, as you now really own a piece of "American Muscle Car" history
ps: suggested name Sally, as in Mustang Sally

That's going to be a fun project.

I hate to ask, but what do you do with 5-10 gallons of bad gasoline??

The statute of limitations has expired from the last time I had to get rid of some- but I still don't want to say how i got rid of it. I suppose you could burn one gallon at a time through the car every time you fill up.

The only Mustang that I remember liking more was the 68 or 69 "Boss 429" that one of the guys in high school had. I got his girlfriend when he broke up with her, but I would have rather had his car.....WW

Wayne, I agree with you. You see, 43 years later she would have gotten old but, the car will be more attractive today and could fish a young babe with it.

I also agree with Sweet, that is a tru Muscle Car.

Friz, how much did you pay for it? (If you don't mind)

The "Boss 9's" had the 'wow' factor, but the truth is that they weren't very fast. They were made for homologation....so they could use the engine in NASCAR at the time. The 428's were substantially quicker, and less cantakerous.

Pete.....I paid $4500 for the car. You can all commence hating me at any time now.

As for bad fuel, remember what I do for a living.

Not that I would ever doubt his canine-ness, a later KK (Nascar) coded 429 would bury any 428 out there. Early models had the wrong valves which was corrected in late 69 plus they had the carbs re-jetted. The problem with the 429 was it lived for high revs so off the line it was a dog (no pun intended). By the 1/8th mile mark it was a beast. The 429 had a 0-60 of 6.8 seconds while the 428 was 5.7 seconds yet the both had the same 1/4 mile speed of 103 MPH. The second 1/8th mile was all about revs and the 429 would out-rev any big block out there. (I have spent many years playing with Mustangs before finding ther error of my way)

Jon....you would be correct in your analysis. The real problem with the Boss 9 was that it was a miserable pig to drive on a regular basis. Quite potent on the track....but out of its element anywhere else.

Sweets....are you saying you have anything other than unrequitted love for me?

BTW.....master cylinder for the Mustang....$17.99 at Oreillys. Chinese, I'm sure, but lifetime warranty. It will have brakes by the end of the day. Oh....and it took me 9 minutes to remove the old one.
