So you're a year older than Mrs Flex and 3.5 years older than me.

She has arthritis in her back (ankylosing spondylitis) and she still lifts; pulled a 225 lb deadlift last week and she can bench 125. Not bad. She trains 4 days a week. Does about 45 minutes of weights and 30 minutes cardio.

The more active you are the better you will feel.

I still run 700+ miles per year, so it's not like I am a total couch potato. The one year I had a stress fracture and couldn't run at all, I rode my bike just short of 2000 miles.

At the moment, I don't see my various arthritis issues being a significant impact on bench pressing, my hands hurt when I bend them forward, but not when I bend them back as in holding a bar over my chest. My elbows have made some scary snapping sounds when I was doing push ups, but no pain as yet. My shoulder needed a little rehab over the last month, but felt OK in the gym last week. That is my biggest concern.

Now that I am back in a weight room, I wouldn't mind doing some squats, but I have the feeling my knee will tell me a straight "no".

Do yourself a favor and get some knee sleeves, elbow sleeves and wrist wraps.

I started wearing knee sleeves for squats a few years ago and I will never squat without them again; from the first set tot he last. Elbow sleeves I only wear once in a while, but I like to have them in my gym bag just in case. Wrist wraps I use on the heavier sets of presses and squats.
