Not my taste. He is a technician for sure. To me it sounds like frantic noise. I can’t discern any musicality in it. It is amazing guys can play like that. I just can’t see putting in the hours to make that sort of musical statement.

Then again, what do I know? I’m an old dinosaur player. That guy probably knows chords.

He is playing the main riff wrong. In his defense, most people do.

I only know this because I played it like he is for years until the dude that replaced SRV in Double Trouble showed me the correct way. You can see the difference between the two approaches when you watch Stevie play it.

He slides up to a B note on the third string twice during each riff. This player is bending to the note the first time (sounds almost the same) and skipping it entirely the second time.

Still a better player than me. I’m going to slow down that first video and figure out WTF he is doing.

There are really two different version of this song. The recoded version and the way he played it live.

On the original recording the first note on the G is a bend not a slide. The B string is also a bend not a slide. Live he plays all slides. Listen close and watch this;

That’s impressive AF I’ll admit. I like when players sprinkle a *little* of this into their playing. When it becomes all their playing (Malmsteen anyone?) it gets old quick.

I know this; I can’t do it.

Rob is a Malmsteen kind of player, very quick and accurate, but he can play with feel as well. He was the replacement player when Danger Danger started touring again. I met him at my guitar shop when he was off the road,
he was just hanging around shredding, I walked in and was blown away.

Great video. I was referring to the studio version. It’s a very subtle difference. But to the trained ear you can hear it. SRV pretty much never played anything the same way twice.

Good catch on the B string too. I do many of those same licks and if somebody asked me exactly what I was doing, all I can do is look like a deer in the headlights. At this point my hand seems to operate independently from my brain and instead is connected to my ear. (Penis still in the same place. )
