When the work is all done, I’ll scan the paid in full receipt and detail who paid how much.

I shared a wooden fence with a neighbor behind me. Technically her fence, stretching across half my back yard. It started falling in. Posts rotted, boards falling off. I asked her about rebuilding it and told her I would split the cost. Nothing. It kept my dogs in so I bought a roll of wire and stretched it as a temporary patch. Time goes by. I asked again. Nothing. Little more time goes by and the rest of the posts start falling leaving nothing to support the wire. I saw her out one day and mentioned it was going to have to be done now and again offered to pay half. Couple of months pass. I rebuilt it myself and paid for the cost. Less than $250. That was four years ago.. Never spoke to her again.

I'd have shoveled all the dog turds over there and told her 'sorry, guess the dogs just like to shit on your side of the fence'.

"hey man, covid, lack of income, new kid, laid off, large medical bills, totaled the car, .....whatever....."

nope, just nothing.

sad.

so i'll cover the shortage, and when the work is all done, and the man is paid in full, i'll get a receipt, scan that, send it out, with a list of who gave how much.

public shaming.
This.

We live in a neighborhood with private roads. Not trying to be a dick, but average value is 7 figures+. The roads are reaching the 25 year limit for wear and tear. Big deal, as the costs are in the 7 figures to get to a point where we can just get into a good maintenance process. We have a small, but vocal group that just wants to let the roads go to shit; just put sealer on them even though there are 2" transverse cracks and sunken substrate that causes alligator faults. I got to a point where I just said, fine, **** it. I'm 100 yards from the gate and I have capable plows and vehicles to take care of myself. I even suggested that we quit plow service and let folks take care of themselves. Of course, the pissy folks said "no way!"

Bottom line is that there are always those folks who don't give a shit until it truly affects them in a negative way. Is there a solution that leaves them in a predicament? I have found that it is sometimes the only way to get them on board. That, and leaving a burning bag of dog shit on their porch. That works too.

We have neighbors like that. "Couldn't afford" to pitch in to replace a shared fence that was falling over....won't maintain their tree (we have paid to have it trimmed twice) - But when it comes time for them to do a remodel or put up a vinyl picket fence in their front yard, they have money for that.

and half the crowd can't follow directions.

told them in writing, twice, to make the checks payable to the contractor, provided exact spelling. nope, couldn't do it. half the checks payable to me.....sigh.....so i had to go to the bank, deposit them into my account, and later i'll write a check for those sums to the contractor.

adult cats are the worst.

Well look at how much $ they saved by having you do thngs....I could be wrong but if a tree hangs over your property line you are allowed to trim it back as long as the amount of trimming will not kill the tree. That cost is on you,not them.

I agree with your sentiments here but his property taxes and his ability to pay them isn't your concern.

if he has 4800 to cover taxes, how does he not have 600 to maintain the road we all use?

Is there an HOA or just all private parties involved?
Why isn't the town responsible for the culvert issue ?
