Postum, Ever Drink It?

As a kid and in teen years, kind of grew up drinking Postum. After going into the service, graduated to coffee and for the most part, favorite beverage outside of bar hopping.

Have had the opportunity over the years and travels to taste many roasts and blends (except the cat shit blend). I haven't had any Postum for maybe 40 years, so out of the blue, just had a desire to go get some. I found out they still make it. I hope it tastes as good as I remember. Most likely for some, an acquired taste.

Postum is a powdered roasted-grain beverage once popular as a coffee substitute. The caffeine-free beverage was created by Post Cereal Company founder C. W. Post in 1895 and marketed as a healthful alternative to coffee.

The Post Cereal Company eventually became General Foods, which was bought by Kraft Foods. Eliza's Quest Foods (www.postum.com) now owns the trademark rights and secret recipe of Postum. Post was a student of John Harvey Kellogg, who believed that caffeine was unhealthy.

The "instant" drink mix version was developed in 1912, replacing the original brewed beverage. Postum is made from roasted wheat bran, wheat, and molasses.

Wow. Looks like it is sold at our local HEB stores. I've heard of it, but never actually seen it on a store shelf before. Obviously someone is drinking it or it wouldn't have any facings on store shelves.

programmer at a past employer drank it all the time. Due to some health issue... he had to stop drinking conventional coffee... and said the Postum was a good alternative.
