Bumped the hut rebuild fund up another $20

A bunch of small amounts end up making a big difference

It seems like my photos are always a day or two behind, but here are some from Monday when they started a cleanup week here.

I like how this worked out..

As far as I know, there will be no government checks, or handouts, or pay for loss of homes..

But they have started something they are doing to clean things up, and also put some food money back into the peoples pockets.

I'm not sure where the funds came from for this, (I think the Philippine government) but each and every village has been doing this.

One person from every household is asked to come help for the village cleanup for one week (5 days) and they get paid a salary of 280 peso a day. (about $6.60)

I'm not sure how many came for this, but when I asked it was over 440 people working.

They started at the beach, and worked on cleaning, burning, digging holes to bury some.

And have been working their way back through the village.

Now this place is really starting to look a lot better since after the storm.

It made me feel good to see everyone working together to make things better again, and also to know they were getting paid well for it as most do not have a chance to make that much usually.

This is the way it should be done..

I also wanted to let you all know that the saw cutter dude is almost finished cutting the lumber for 6 new 10 foot by 12 foot huts and will be done in the morning.

I told him earlier today that tomorrow morning after he is finished??????

Go ahead and start cutting the lumber for 6 more!

We may not have the funds to put Nipa roofs and the Amakan walls on all of them, but they will at least have the frames to start building for now.

Lumber list for one 10x12 Hut.

4x4x10---- 6
2x3x12---- 4
2x3x10---- 7
2x3x8----- 6
2x2x8----- 56

The saw cutter charges 8 peso per board foot.

We have to also buy the trees, and I will be better able to figure the total cost per board foot when the order is done and I know how many trees it took.
(average I think is about 3 to 3 1/2 trees for one)

The cost of buying the same lumber from the Lumber Yard/Hardware store is 21 peso per board foot delivered.

The word is out now that we are building some huts, and I have had quite a few more people coming to me asking for help.. I tell them that it all depends on future donations, and make no promises, but I do say that I will try to do the best I can.

I have also had some people ask me for just one tree, and to pay the saw cutter for them.

I am thinking about doing this instead of huts in the future after we get done with what we are working on now, as it will not be as much help to them, but will help a larger number of people in the long run.

Everyone here at the Barn has already done so much for this, and I don't want to ask for anymore from any of you.

But possibly your church might do a fundraiser? or possibly one of you guys that is in good standing over at the other Forum might ask over there?

I have thought about it myself, but am shy to ask as I am not very well known over there.

Or maybe other forums that any of you post at regularly?

Just a thought...

We have been cutting a lot of coco lumber this week..

And I mean a lot!

The lumber for the original 6 huts has been delivered, and we just delivered 2 more huts today.

Plus Erning's hut, and also Lusing we are helping... so 10 huts total so far.

Today is my buddy Pinoy's mothers 88th birthday, And we gave her the lumber for a hut this evening..

Her home was completely destroyed.. I told her we would also give her the Amakan and Nipa and nails to get it completed.

She was so happy I thought she was going to cry.

Photo of her below buying a bottle of the cheap Tanduay 65 Rhum from a few weeks ago.

Erning's hut is coming along and it should be finished this week if we can get the Nipa for the roof.

Photo of Erning.. I was trying to get him to smile so you could see his teeth...

(he has none)

My Boy Chico helping carry a few boards up to the seawall for Erning's Hut.

Lumber for two huts in our back yard.

Quite a few people that live on one parcel of land were each given two fallen trees per household by the land owner to help them rebuild.

They cannot afford to pay the saw cutter.. so I have been keeping him busy cutting for many, and this way the lumber only cost us 8 peso per board foot.

I have lost track of how many trees so far, but do have a pile of notes to go through and will sort it out.

I have also promised a few I would buy them a tree and pay the saw cutter for them.

But now it seems like everyday more and more people are asking for me to have a tree or two cut for them, and some ask for a tree... just one tree please.

It is hard to say no.. so I don't.. I tell them I will try, but cannot promise.

But have already helped some I told that a few weeks ago, recently.

This guy below "RinRin" (a gay school teacher) is just one of the many that have asked, and I told him that it depends on donations, but I would try to help him get a tree..

Hey Tim, just wanted to say that you done good, real good.....and thanks for that. I'm proud to say that I know you, sorta.
Q. is there any danger of deforesting the islands in order to rebuild everything?

The damage has already been done...

We are only cutting the trees that are already down, and some that are going to fall anyway.

Tim, can you give us an idea of where we stand on cash? I know that you have bought the majority of presents but needed to go back and get some more girls toys, that you have spent (and probably are still spending) some of the money to provide basic sustenance to several people within the village, and that you are spending money to purchase some coconut trees and have them cut into lumber plus providing nipa and other construction materials for the 10x12 shelters that we have previously discussed as well as having lumber cut for additional needy people. All of which is exactly what we wanted you to do with the money.

Basically, I guess what I am asking is how much more you may need to complete all this great work that you have started. Unfortunately, with Christmas at hand and the inevitable grasping hands of the IRS my access to ready cash is not as great as it was last month. You would be surprised by what my children tell me what their children want for Christmas and 13 grand kids can equal a significant sum. None the less, I will scrape up the spare change and send it to you. Please give us a status of where we are, what you need to complete this work, and how much you still need.

Let us know in USD$

That way if if somebody is short on cash this holiday season, they could still make a major difference in a family's life on the island this season.

If a cut tree is under $20

Good question Doug.

I did think about working that out, so now is the best time to get it done.

It's kinda confusing as one tree produces more lumber than another.

But for instance the people I was talking about that have had two trees donated to them, I have been paying the saw cutter for them.. the saw cutting is averaging between 1500p to 2200p for the both.

I was getting trees before for 800p each, but am now buying them for 500p each, but I am told the price will be going back up soon.

So for the high.. lets go with the 2200p for the cutting, and two trees at 500p each (for now) would be 3200p total, the exchange is about 43/1 now, but I only get about 42/1 after converting to dollar through Paypal.
(changes daily)

So in USD it would be about $76 for two trees cut and ready to go, one tree cut would be about $38

Two trees is a nice start on one 10X12 hut, but not enough to finish the framing completely.

I use the village truck to deliver the lumber, and they only charge me 60p for a 1 liter Coke bottle of gas, sometimes two..
(about $1.43 each)

I can always get guys to help me load for free.

I can't tell you exactly where we are right now on funds, (my notes are at home & a mess) but there have been more donations since I last posted up the total and we do still have some money left in the bank to spend.

I will try to get it sorted out in the next few days and post it up.

(Thought about just handing Dixie the notes and let him sort it out when he gets here..)

Basically we are working on building 10 complete huts right now, (estimate about $300 each) but instead of trying to build just a few more huts, I think it is better to help more people get their free wood cut to lumber for now, and start buying and giving trees to more people.

This way we can help more people in the long run, at lest they can get something framed, and use what they have left from their old rubble, or we can also buy them Amakan (bamboo walling) later when it comes available.

I would love to build them all new huts, but this is not going to happen when there are so many people that have no homes now.

Most all of the homes in our village were completely destroyed. (400 or more I am guessing?)

(Not to mention the rest of the island here)

The people here are now living in shantys with tarps and scrap lumber, and now some have tents.

When someone ask, I tell them I will put them on the list, but I make no promise and let them know the funds are coming from donations.

But already I am hearing that some people are wondering why I am helping some, and not others... why not me.. they ask?

I will admit that I first started helping the people I knew the best, and considered friends. but one that I do consider a friend, didn't need the help as much as others, (have a house, just some roof damage) so I passed him over to help others that needed it more, and now I hear he is not happy with me.. Oil well

There is no way we can help them all, but one by one at a time... I do hope to help as many as I can.

I thought about this part of your comment on the way home last night after they generator was shut off...

I don't think I am doing anything more than any of you here would also do if they were in the same spot as me.

I know most of you would do the same..

I think the real good that has been done, is all of the members here that have sent the funds to make it all happen for these people..
