I recently read “Peak” by Anders Ericsson. It’s all about how to achieve world class performance and he uses musicians as one of his examples throughout the book. In short, if you’re not *constantly* pushing yourself to improve you never will. He goes on to say if you reach a certain level or proficiency, unless you continue to push, you will even lose the skills you have to some degree.

The 10,000 hour rule can be traced back to a paper Ericsson wrote in the early 90’s.

Very true. I’m relentless. Not about my own playing Necessarily but with regard to band leading. I fired my brother. Twice. I’ve been known to dock pay for being late, wearing the wrong clothes or showing up unprepared. I push people who are far better musicians than me. Then I work like hell to keep up.

I will call out anyone if they aren’t giving me what I want since I always have a clear vision of the sound I’m after. I’m not a dick about it but they know I’m not ****ing around. In fact it has gained me respect from the best players. And they always go the extra mile for me.

It’s weird because it’s counter intuitive. I used to think being laid back was the way. **** that. I want people to be astonished at my shows. I hope they are.

That’s the secret behind those big shows. My producer and I won’t compromise.
