my doc said low salt, low fat, and try to lose some weight (tracking calories now too).

why can't sitting on the couch, eating M&Ms while drinking root beer and watching Sports Center be good for you?

we're adjusting just fine. learning to do more cooking ourselves, less packaged stuff (high in sodium).

DAB, I used to eat a fair amount of salt, although I was never one to add salt even before tasting. Now I eat salt on nothing, not even a baked potato or vegetables. It took about 2 weeks to get used to that, and now I don't miss it. There's plenty of salt added to anything canned or prepared.

Be aware of caffeine, too. Caffeine is even in orange soda. All you have to do is read up on it, and you're set to go. About losing weight: Obviously a big steak with potatoes and buttered bread on the side will pack on the pounds. You don't have to cut that out entirely; just substitute grilled fish and, say, asparagus a couple of times a week. And grill a chicken breast twice a week instead of eating fried chicken or chicken fried steak. Another trick: Any cake, pie, or cookie recipe can have 50%-75% of the sugar called for taken out, and you'll never know it.

Most peeps get their excess calories two ways: Being in a rut of eating fatty foods every meal and from desserts/other sweets. Instead of a piece of cake or pie, eat a pear or plums or other fruit. If you're not real hungry one meal, eat a pear or apple with peanut butter spread on it. Surprisingly filling. Believe you'll adjust to it rapidly because the substitutes are simply good-tasting food.

oh yeah, already doing lots of those.

lunch today: homemade tuna salad on bread. according to my 'lose it' app, 433 calories. no salt bread, drank water.

also made a batch of granola bars yesterday, had one as a snack earlier, 4mg salt in them, mostly dried fruits, pine nuts, oats, bound together with an egg and apple juice. little melted choc on top. pretty tasty and chewy. way better than store bought.

The most difficult change for me (and one I still have problems with) was my transition from military life to civilian life.

My divorce is definitely number one on the list of lifestyle changes I wish never had to take place.

And finally, quitting my job to move back to FL from TX was a big change and i am still getting adjusted. Everything i knew has changed except my friends who I choose not to associate with now.

DJ, I have no idea, but your choice to not associate with your friends could be a wise decision. What do you think?

DAB, there's no way I can eat store-bought granola for the very reason you mention: Store-bought tastes stale and artificial compared to home-made. Home-made granola is damned good!

Good on you!

i'd munch the whole batch, but that would screw up my calories.....don't eat because you are bored, eat because you need food and are hungry. have one left for the day, saving for later.

and now it's raining, so we'll play inside.

I've got Alcohol issues and they do nothing but tempt me. Plus, they are all about the nudie bar scene (most work there) and have no future plans to better themselves.

Unfortunately, I understand this though my circumstances are a bit different. Same sentiments and anti-social behavior on my part, though.

Sounds like life. John has worked, and still works, and is working tonight, crazy rotating shifts our entire married life. Sometimes I felt like a single parent when our sons were little. Y'all will make it. The empty nest thing is kinda fun!

Quitting drinking wasn't easy, but I'm happy I did it.
