They also make you as limp as a wet noodle. Your body eventually adjusts, but not completely. There's flushing symptoms from the niacin which SUCK. I could go on. Needless to say...I can't wait to stop taking them.

Divorce after 17 years was a drastic change in my way of life, she got the house and the kids. That bit her in the ass big time later on in life, that's another story.

Also a Fred Sanford big one, quintuple by-pass. Lay off the fats as much as possible, but those carbs...........

I am genetically predisposed, but I get tested twice a year and my doctor is fine with me not taking meds as long as I keep my cholesterol around 200 and my triglycerides around 200.

I understand the implications of high cholesterol/triglycerides (I'm a freakin' biochemist ). I would rather control it by myself as long as possible. I'm headed towards other issues anyways ( both my parents are diabetic) so I know my future, just a matter of getting in the habit now and avoiding the inevitable through smart choices, not through denial.

Chuck, I started this thread with you (and others) in mind. You, too, are going through lfestyle changes with you hand. I'm hoping these stories will encourage you to keep working with your hand and the changes--and challenges--your accident has brought and will continue to bring.

The once-inevitable pattern of succumbing to your parents' ailments can be broken or significantly deferred with diet, exercise, and medical care. Modern medicine, though not without its faults, is helping us live longer, healthier, ailment-free lives.

Ya, but you hear of marathon runners who all of a sudden drop dead, due to a genetic thing, which could have been prevented with proper medication...
I agree that a healthy lifestyle contributes to a better body, but sometime you just have to be honest with your doctor, and let him or her make the call.

Being diagnosed with celiac disease. My entire diet changed. And when I get away from gluten free foods, I get very sick.

Bucwheat and Yamma, take care of yourselves. I have been a type 1 for 20 years. As you said, it is a major adjustment, but one you need to make. I am doing well thus far (knocking on wood).

Jeff, you make very valid points and I agree with you...of course to a degree.
There are people who need meds to live, without a doubt, and they should stay on whatever med they are on.

But I want to add a little kicker.

I'm 44, 6'1", and weigh about 225. I admit my health has declined due to family and work circumstances.

My doctor sees that my cholesterol is up, so I take Crestor.
-Good now, my numbers are where they should be.
My blood pressure is up (I have been 140 / 80 my whole life btw), so I take Diovan.
-Good also, my bp is down.
I start to develop arthritis, so I'm on something that starts with a "L"
-cool, no more arthritis problems.

Not once did my doctor ask about my eating habits. He just wants to throw med after med down my gullett.

I guess what I am steering to is that doctors should be more in tune with teaching people how to stay healthy naturally, not just having them pop pills.

While I agree with you about what doctors should be doing, monitoring peep's diets is impossible. Besides, people lie about their diets. Not many docs are going to let a patient go unmedicated and wait and see if the numbers improve based on the patient's supposed lifestyle and diet changes. Instead they tell them to pop 80 mg. of cholesterol med a day, and no chances are taken.

33 years ago I was dealt a serious health blow. Then less than a year later - was given a second chance.

Even thought it's been smooth sailing for 32 years now; I never forget what happened; and count my blessings every day.

I never thought I'd be saying this, but...well...turkey bacon isn't bad. Actually it's good. It's a lot leaner than pig bacon, too. My daughter grew up eating turkey bacon, and she won't eat any other kind now. Slip into it by wrapping it around a filet, or putting it in pork 'n beans, or on a salad.
