FALSE

The slanderers usually use the same idiotic figures, the total $$$ amount of the U.S. national debt.
Like this:

Imbeciles. Ever hear of INFLATION???

The FACT is, while Reagan was NOT superman and able to single-handedly solve the problem, he did drastically alter the direction of spending. Annual budget increases PLUMMETED under President Reagan, and the national debt increase was more a product of the run-up in spending preceding him. From an average increase of 10.65% under Nixon/Ford, to 13.5% under Carter. Reagan signed budgets with an average increase of under 7%. He LITERALLY halved the annual budget increase trend he inherited from the Carter years:

2. Reagan didn't care about the poor or the working class, "trickle-down" economics was a scam, only the rich benefited.

WRONG again. Sorry leftists, but LBJ's "Great Society" was an abject failure. Reaganomic's rising tide did indeed lift ALL boats:

The latter 2 graphs are my own work, using hard data from GPO Access and the Census Bureau, respectively. If the links no longer function, you can easily find the information from their home pages---they update and re-do their sites constantly, so links don't always last forever. The data does, and historical data tables are always available.
That's pretty telling information there, Will. Thanks for digging all of that up.

Without taking into account inflation, the numbers can be skewed almost as bad as that hockey stick concoction of that MMGW guy.

Awwwww, you mad?

Who are you? And are you familiar with the concepts of "humor" and "hyperbole" ???

And how did you even remember that comical rant this long? Obsessed with me?

Sweet Jesus man.

Feel free to, you know, argue intellectually. I noticed you had NOTHING to say about the actual data I presented. What's the matter Sally, reality not jiving with your views either? Cat got your tongue? Too simple minded to rebut?

I actually was in college while Reaganomics was doing its damage; you know, that so called trickle down economis that never worked and has proven it never will.

Thankfully I got my student loan before he "fixed" our education system.

Amen to that.

On November 5, 1994, former President Ronald Reagan published a letter to the American people announcing his diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

My fellow Americans,

I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer's disease.

Upon learning this news, Nancy and I had to decide whether as private citizens we would keep this a private matter or whether we would make this news known in a public way.

In the past, Nancy suffered from breast cancer and I had cancer surgeries. We found through our open disclosures we were able to raise public awareness. We were happy that as a result many more people underwent testing. They were treated in early stages and able to return to normal, healthy lives.

So now we feel it is important to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clear understanding of the individuals and families who are affected by it.

At the moment, I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done. I will continue to share life's journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch with my friends and supporters.

Unfortunately, as Alzheimer's disease progresses, the family often bears a heavy burden. I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this painful experience. When the time comes, I am confident that with your help she will face it with faith and courage.

In closing, let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future.

I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.

Thank you, my friends.

Sincerely,

Ronald Reagan

Thumbs down Wages Under Reagan

Stagnating Workers' Wages

In 1979 the American worker's average hourly wage was equal to $15.91 (adjusted for inflation in 2001 dollars). By 1989 it had reached only $16.63/hour. That's a gain of only 7 cents a year for the entire Reagan decade.

But wait. Things get worse! By 1995 it had risen to only $16.71, or virtually no gain whatsoever over the 6 years between 1989 and 1995. During the great 'boom years' between 1995 and 2000 it rose briefly to $18.33 per hour. In other words, from 1979 to 2000, even before the most recent Bush recession, after more than two decades the American worker's average wages increased on average only 11.5 cents per hour per year! With nearly all of that coming in the five so-called 'boom' years of 1995-2000, and most of that lost once again in the last three years. And that includes for all workers, even those with college degrees.

The picture is worse for workers who had no college degree. That's more than 100 million workers, or 72.1% of the workforce. For them there was no 'boom of 1995-2000' whatsoever. Their average real hourly wages were less at the end of 2000 than they were in 1979! And since 2000 their wages have continued to slide further.

Reaganomics

Since we are, improbably but importantly, discussing Ronald Reagan again, I thought it might be worth posting a few graphs on the Reagan economic record.

First, the unemployment rate. What this figure shows is that “Morning in America” was a one-shot affair — a recovery from a very severe recession.

Next, incomes. These are inflation-adjusted after-tax income for the richest 1 percent and the middle quintile, from the Congressional Budget Office, both expressed as indexes with 1979=100. Big gains for the rich, not so much for the middle class:

Next, the poverty rate, up during the recession then down again, but never regaining its previous low:

Finally, a table on productivity. This is from the 2007 Economic Report of the President. Notice that even the Bush administration dates the upswing in productivity from 1995, not the Reagan era.

In short, the Reagan economy was a story of recession and recovery, but not of any sustained improvement in performance. That didn’t come until the middle Clinton years.
