Electric rudder control? Sometimes things short out, sometimes they short on.

I almost got crushed by a motor lifeboat on a lift once when the winch shorted. Saw it lifting with nobody at the controls so I ran over and started banging on the emergency stop. It didn't give a shit! Cable snapped when it ran out of slack and the boat dropped splitting a half inch thick steel deck. It was so close I could reach out and touch it.

It was originally called the Harbor Crossing but was dubbed the FSK Bridge just before the opening. We all called it The Key Bridge.

In all seriousness, it's a horrific tragedy. I can't even imagine the terror the people on that bridge felt. The only bright spot, if there is one, is the bridge seemed to be virtually empty at the time.

There were two people rescued, one severely hurt, and one, miraculously unharmed. Pretty sure that's going to be it.....there won't be any more survivors.

Prognostication: Our government will spend tens of millions investigating this, and come up with a bunch of new diktats intended to prevent something like this from ever happening again, but won't suggest the obvious, which is, have the same tugboats that get the ships out of the port stay with those ships until they get past this bridge and are in the channel, heading the right direction.

I'm pretty certain that all these ships are run by "Harbor Pilots" whose sole job is to navigate the ships in and out of the harbor safely. The entire reason for the harbor pilot is most sea captains are not familiar with every port they go to.
I knew a couple of men who were harbor pilots, and these guys were very highly experienced and very good at their jobs. They board many different vessels and run them in and out of harbors. And they are very very well compensated.

The pilots were along for the ride once power was lost at a critical point in the passage. It wouldn't have mattered if the pilots were little green men, gay militants, lumberjacks, or DEI wonderkids.

The ship sent a distress call before it hit the bridge saying it lost power. Traffic was stopped as a result, probably by the construction company personnel.

Great video.
Several of those semi's just made it over before impact.
And it may be camera angle but it looked like the ship was outside the channel before losing power and impact.

It was in the channel. There's a lot of info, video, photos and route maps here. The Captain made a distress call saying they lost power. The root cause analysis will focus on the how and why it lost power.

It's incredible to me that the planets align in such a perfect way, that the ship managed to hit the support. All that open water and space to drift through and it managed to squarely hit a support.

It's like a car leaving the road and hitting the only tree in a 10 mile radius.

I was reading another site saying there were at least 8 workers repairing pot holes on the bridge. Unless they were on the very ends I don't think they had a chance.
