Default [Woodworking] cutting board of many colors

got a request for a cutting board, and they asked about scraps...i have scraps, lots of scraps. so it's time to make a dent in the scrap piles.

this will be a cutting board of many colors (reminds me of the Dolly Parton song "coat of many colors"), in some sort of crazy quilt design (still working on that part).

final dimension: 12x21x2" thick. juice groove on one side, i'll also add lifting grooves on the short sides. gonna be heavy.

first, we gather some lumber:

woods included are:

left pile, bottom to top - walnut, more walnut, maple, cherry, hickory, more maple, teak, white oak on top of both piles

right pile, bottom to top - teak, mesquite, mesquite, ebony.

i also found a few little pieces of purple heart (not shown) that i'll try to work in.

next up: plane the surfaces smooth (so they glue up well) and then cut to 2-1/16" thicknesses. then arrange in some cool design.

Hey Douglas,

Depending on how that comes out, I may be interested in one too, help you get rid of more scraps! LOL! Albeit I'd probably want something smaller than your usual.
(The one I've been working with for a few years now is about 12" round, maybe a little bigger and rectangular...)

Looking forward to pics of this project!

most boards can be made in 2 days. day 1: cut strips, glue up and wait. day 2: plane glued up strips smooth, cross cut and glue up again and wait. day 3: sand and finish.

this one? eh, not so much. it will likely take 4-5 days of gluing up in sections and waiting, trimming ragged edges, gluing up some more....stay tuned.
