The figure 8 pattern has a better chance to keep the mating surface flat. It reduces the pressure of your hands in one area pushing and a different are pulling.

For example, do it with your left hand on the front of the head and the right hand at the rear of the head. Do the figure 8.

Then go on the opposite side of the table/work bench or switch hand locations and do a few more figures 8s.

EDIT

Here's a video Tim from the cub cadet forum did on resurfacing a Kohler head. Same principle

I have a TON of material left, so I will certainly apply this technique. Clearly this is the most important mating surface of the entire engine assembly.

Looks pretty good.
Besides, if you've got a few low spots you just have to slam the head down a bit tighter with an oversize gasket.

The frame is on the body. That center piece is aluminum and ensures the drive train stays rigid.

Why not? I have a lift!!

Besides, it gives us the ability to clean EVERYTHING, and maybe even paint a few things. The underside is covered with Georgia mud, and the engine and transmission were gnarly. We rolled the chassis into the driveway and soaked it in engine de-greaser and then pressure washed the dirty bits.

This approach also allows us to inspect absolutely everything. I did break the clutch line during the separation. Fortunately, I can disconnect the quick connects and run downtown to a place that made my clutch line for the race car. It's all good.

Damn does this girl love to get dirty. She looked just as dirty last night at the grocery store and some woman asked her what event she had just attended.

Her Christmas gift....Baymax seat covers....except they made him grey.

We showed them to G early, so we can ship them back. She'll have the replacements before she leaves in January. Baymax is WHITE!!! We even created the artwork, and sent the samples...he was ALWAYS white.

What model is that? It doesn't look like it's attached to the floor, and it has wheels to move?
