Don't want it, don't need it, have no use for it but every one I have looked at in the last two days has one. Why not add some more USB ports or something you could really use instead of designing the damn things for highschool girls?

You can order without...my last work computer had one, I taped a piece of paper over it. When I ordered my new work machine, I specifically opted for one without.

Considered that a web cam is a popular option, and at some point, it just became cheaper to put it in every laptop rather than stop the assembly line to retool for a camera-less computer?

I think that's how we ended up with tilt steering wheels as standard equipment. Same with air conditioning. I'm sure there are folks who could get away with a no a/c vehicle, but when was the last time you saw one? Probably cheaper to just put a/c in every unit than to stop the line and retool for a few vehicles without a/c.

IOW, maybe you can pay extra to have a customized laptop that does not have the feature you don't want on it.

They could put in a cheap plastic press-in insert to cover the hole and keep the elements out of the inside of the laptop, maybe even emboss the plastic with the computer maker's logo.

Use the tin foil - it's way better.
