Pelosi warns Democratic president could declare national emergency on guns

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that if President Trump can declare a national emergency to construct his border wall, a Democratic president can use the same powers to take all sorts of steps the GOP won’t like.

She specifically suggested guns as an area where a Democratic president might try an end-run around Congress.

“Because if the president can declare an emergency on something that he has created as an emergency, an illusion that he wants to convey, just think of what a president with different values can present to the American people,” she said.

She continued: “You want to talk about a national emergency, let’s talk about today, the one-year anniversary of another manifestation of the epidemic of gun violence in America. That’s a national emergency”

She made her comments to reporters Thursday afternoon, after the White House said Mr. Trump will sign the spending bill moving through Congress, which shortchanges his request for wall money, but will claim emergency powers to have the Pentagon build the wall anyway, using money Congress already appropriated.

A President wanting to circumvent Congress can use the national emergency. While THIS one may be something you support, another president could easily do it for something you do NOT support.

If it is open to one side, it'll be open to the other...

The problem here is, the bill he's said he will sign has language that could probably do away with deportation, period. Anyone who is a potential sponsor for an illegal alien kid we are going through the legal process to deport is shielded from deportation themselves, so it seems like any illegal here just has to say the magic words, "potential sponsor" and the entire might of our government is powerless to stop them. ICE just goes back to the house, and illegals become de facto permanent residents.

You'd have to get another law passed to negate this one; think about how hard that will be, and think about how bad things would have to get before Congress would do it, and by then, it would probably be too late. All the border wall in the world won't do any good at that point.

Been thinking about the powers that are included in a "national emergency" and with “seizing bank accounts”....Can't help me wonder if this might be something he wants to happen so he can take control of some accounts that might be associated with high-profile politicians?
