Talking What a pain in the ass.. 2.0 self inflicted

After 18 years of abuse of my truck this weekend was time to rebuild the front end. Not knowing without tearing it apart I just bought the "common wear parts kit, wheel bearing hubs and locking hubs. So, it begins Friday

Parts bought for the rebuild. Detroit Bearing hub, Mile Marker locking hub and Venture truck parts rebuilt kit

Teardown and rebuild, PITA #1 running to the parts house to get a bearing press for the u-joints and other tools needed

Old vs new...

PITA #2. Looks great right? Until I looked behind me to see the dust shield laying on the ground. Teardown #2

It gets better! I reinstalled the entire unit to find...PITA #3 I reinstalled the shield backwards. Teardown #3 Good thing is, my wife didn't come out to find out why I was swearing and throwing tools, so we're still married

Finally got the driver side done this morning. I like it, no more plastic pieces. Looks good too!

Before...

After...

It has vacuum & manual hubs. The vacuum hasn't worked for years but should now with new seals and vacuum lines. I just haven't had the chance to check it yet

My first Suburban with "automatic hubs" was my 1990 1500. My mechanic, when he checked it out before I purchased it, told me to engage the 4WD every month to keep everything working correctly.

That "saved" me three hours of shop rate if he were to free everything back up.

It's 18yrs old and only has 175 miles which ain't shit for the motor, I've always used my truck for what it's designed for, hauling, towing, 4 wheeling, much of that to the extreme. So it's everything else that needs to be worked on from time to time

Good to see ya posting here again Joey!
