I had two electric water heaters at one of my rental properties, and had no idea about the anode until one of the heating elements burned out, and I asked a question about it at the other place. Changed the burned out element, and both anodes. Sold the property a couple of years later, so I don't know how that effected the long-term performance.

Just like the anode rod if you don't know about it you don't need it. I sure hope someone told him about oil changes.

Be a baller, go tankless, and never be a slave to peasant maintenance.

Then again, be ballerless and buy three for the price of one,,,

As I posted, I’d have to completely remove both water heaters to access these rods…. I did confuse them and thought you were referring to the elements. Next year I’ll rip them out and do the rods!

Thx for the learning!

I’m on my third set of water heaters…..

If you can access the top of the water heaters, you don't have to have enough clearance to pull the anodes straight out of the tank. The anodes bend fairly easily so you can pull up, then bend, pull up, then bend, etc until the old one comes out. Since they are usually fairly corroded, the old ones bend pretty easily.

You can replace the old anode with a flexible anode. Flexible anodes are segments wired together so they easily flex at the join. Even better than flexible anodes are powered anodes. Powered anodes use a thin flexible wire instead of a larger-diameter rod.
