Default Water softeners

On a road trip to my MIL's. Lower NYS just below Harriman State Park. On a well. They always had the best water- Baby Doll used to rave about it after washing her hair. Taste was awesome. Then the old gal had Culligan come in and test, "oh, you got hard water", then installed a softener.

Tastes OK, hardly what it was. Take a shower and rinsing seems to take forever. Slippery water.

WTF

Saleshole was slick. They didn't need a water softener as much as he wanted the sale.

bypass it, too much salt going in the water and/or too many minerals removed

Yes, it's mostly BS.

I had a well drilled in 2005, plenty of water but it is loaded with iron. I lived with it for a few months but had to do something about it. Ice cubes were orange, boiled water would turn orange, and iron bacteria formed a thick orange scum on the inside of the toilet tank.

So I had a softener put in (Water-Rite) that was especially designed to remove iron. It works well, but as far as the water being soft I don't care and don't see any advantage.

A buddy of mine is a germ-o-phobe and is a big softener fanatic. He's critical of anyone who DOESN'T have a softener. But then he believes that space aliens built the pyramids, so there's that.

I had a house in the hills south of Syracuse, and the water had a lot of magnesium. After about two weeks of loose stools we got used to it.

We had iron too, apparently not as much as yours, so I am familiar with iron bacteria. Lime-Away once/ week and all was good.

Thats what it sounds like. I live on property with a 200' well. Its considered "soft" and it is great for washing clothes, cars, does not plug up pipes, tastes real good and has been considered by many of my friends as some of the best tasting water on the lake.

Do to medical reasons I drink a lot of water. I always have a quart of iced water handy and refill it often.

Actually you are feeling the effects of surfactants not clinging to the minerals in the water making for a smooth feeling rinse. The rinse is actually better with soft water than hard water.

We had a softener when we lived in Texas and loved it other that the fact that it does take mineral out of the water making the taste a little off as you said. I proved it one day for my neighbor who was thinking of installing one. I washed a towel at our house and a towel at his house. After the cycle I put both towels in a bucket of water from my spigot. Swished them around and then took them out. Wringed both out into empty buckets. The towel from my washer didn't leave any soap suds in the bucket but his left a lot. This is what your feeling when you bathe in hard water. The mineral clinging to your skin. With soft water this doesn't happen because those minerals are gone and the water feels "soft".

When I built our last home I bought a very good quality water softener and had a plumber put in but I had already had separate pipes run for cold water to kitchen sink, outside faucets and water to fridge.

One of the biggest scams around for years. Some actually need it some grew up with it and like feeling like a frogs butt. But guarantee if you let the salesman in he will tell you you need it no matter what. Don't believe me call them all over for their free water test. They are better known than Nigerian Prince.

Tell that to your pipes if you live in an area with really hard water. They do work and work well. I didn't buy mine from a salesman. I ordered it myself and installed it myself.

I read it and understood what you mean. I agree, only certain parts of the country need softeners. In the part of Texas we lived in the limestone was so bad if you didn't have a softener you'd be in a world of hurt. The amount of limestone in the water caused the water to be cloudy. In our case I could put water in a glass and let it evaporate and it would leave a small layer of limestone on the bottom of the glass. Not to mention the glass was cloudy white all the way up to where it was filled. Now think how all your glasses come out of the dishwasher if you didn't have a softener. We need it, most don't.

I agree 100 percent if you really need it you most likely know it. My point is the salesman will try every trick in the book to sell it to everyone. Just like the time gone by vacuum salesman.
