that's me in June 1994, on the frozen runway at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, waiting for the mid-winter airdrop. it was a little cold that day, about -35F or so.

ok, follow along here, only doing this once:

glue up 5 pieces of oak, about 5" square each, let cure overnight.

unclamp, draw outline of heart on top.

saw heart shaped chunk, discard cutoff pieces.

got it so far?

now turn 90 degrees and cut off the top and bottom, about 1/4" thick or so, label and set aside.

take remaining heart shaped piece, turn back to original orientation, select starting point, in this case, near the pointy end.

carefully, in one cut, cut out another heart shaped piece, leaving about 1/4" of shell/body remaining. when you get to end of where you started your cut, turn off bandsaw, and back the wood out.

remove just cut inner heart shaped piece, set aside.

now we have a top, a bottom, and a hollow middle.

get the small heart piece back, turn 90 degrees, and cut off the top of that, the end that matches to the bigger top. save that slice, it'll be glued to the underside of the bigger top.

glue the bottom to the middle. glue the inner top to the outer top.

take some sawdust and glue, fill in the kerf.

sand and finish. confounding young children all over.

got it?

HOW in hell you get a bandsaw blade into the center of that wood ?? much less cut circumference on the top, much less the tip on the bottom??

need a recip saw to do that, as the outside wood surrounds the cut....so HOW??? unless you gluing the surround/outside/curved wood....???

Somewhere in the heart, he drilled out a hole that was wider than the saw blade. Then he snipped the bandsaw blade, passed it through the hole and then welded the blade back together. When the center is cut out, he re-snips the blade and removes it from the heart and then throws the blade away.
