Default some (lots) pics from my alaska trip

got in wed, and drove down to homer on Thursday. Had a little cottage just outside homer with this view

and hung out on the deck with some cocktails, cigars and watching eagles

Went to dinner at a place called wasabi. awesome place, awesome owners. didn't get there till after ten so the grill was already shut down, but they gave us a choice of some stuff they could still make. we all ate wild boar from new zealand. was unbelievable. probably top ten meal i've ever had. saw this on the way to dinner just off the road.

The next day we went on an overnight halibut fishing trip. The limit is 2 per day, so we caught 2 each before midnight and 2 each after midnight, coming back about ten the following morning. There were about 30 people fishing on the boat, and about 20 of us got in a $5 pot for the biggest. Guess I won with this one.

one of the deckhands that was cool as hell.

pic does no justice, but this young slim was pretty hot and cool as hell. didn't weight 110 soaking wet, but she busted her ass, outworked the guys and was crawling all over that boat barking orders.

next on to seward for a boat tour of some wildlife and glaciers. on our way, stopped to do all threee canyons at 6 mile creek. lots of class 5, and the meter was at 10.7. not sure what that means, but they said if it were at 11 we wouldnt have been going. here's one pretty cool sequence. i'm the ugly mugg in the white helmet.

boat tour in seward. went on that first little boat in the middle.

left the following morning, stayed night in anchorage then got on a train to denali

apparently we were on the geriatric train from the princess cruise line. after many cocktails, i figured i'd get everyone's picture

ATV tour that night

then bus tour through denali park the next day

closest we got any any grizzlies

then an air tour of mt mckinley. we were supposed to land on a glacier, but the clouds didn't cooperate. this was not our plane, but it's twin sister.

immediately after air tour, back on train, spend the night in anchorage come home the next day

I've been trying to convince Karen to do our Honeymoon in Alaska -- I sent her the pic's hopefully it helps convince her.

How cold was the trip? Obviously excluding the white water and offshore fishing trip.

What a godforsaken place. Not a McDonald's or WalMart in sight. How can people live like that?

Just kidding, of course. Alaska is definitely on my "must see" list. And Alaskan fishing is on my "must do" list.

It was really pretty comfortable with a couple layers. 45-55 probably the whole trip. we were warned by several that the state bird in teh mosquito, and while there are plenty of them and they are big, i wasn't bothered too much. which is unusual as i typically get chewed up pretty bad. i chalked it up to the cigar smoke

I left out one day that just the three of us went on a much smaller boat for king salmon fishing. only caught one first thing in the morning and pretty bored the rest of the day. not sure why i don't have those pics online. will have to see when i get home what happened to them.

ended up shipping home about 85 pounds of halibut and about 15 of king salmon

I highly recommend going if you can talk her into it. we did a cruise last august that started in seward and ended in vancouver after about 4 stops that was another amazing way to see alaska as well.

I rode that same train from Fairbanks to Anchorage when I was there on my honeymoon in 1993. We stopped in Denali for the afternoon and night and took a bus tour of the park. I think the geriatrics are a constant up there. I remember one old lady sitting on the bus in front of us coughed for the entire tour. I seriously thought she was gonna croak right there.

I did my honeymoon in Alaska. It turned out to be a really bad choice since my bride was such a royal pain in the ass. I think Karen would probably really enjoy herself there though.
Just be prepared to pay big $$ for hotels.

Yamma and I leave on Sunday to Fairbanks and will be in AK for the next two weeks.

Nice to get me a little sneak preview. I will let you know if the bears are still at it when I get back.

Great pics, thanks for sharing.

Great pics - thanks for sharing! Like Dixie posted, we leave in a few days for up there, and it's taken quite a bit of planning just with what to pack. I know we are both looking forward to it! (geriatrics and all)
