The saying "perception is reality" is something I, and many others, fought in Corporate America because it isn't just wrong, it is totally destructive to society. One of the guys I worked with was a combat Marine in Viet Nam. He admitted that even decades later, sometimes when he saw an Asian man who looked a certain way, he felt that the guy would try to kill him if the opportunity presented itself. Does that make it a reality? Is "Bob", who is of Cambodian descent, now a would-be murderer that we should all keep an eye on?

Of course not, and "Brian" would talk openly about it. Brian KNEW that HE had an issue that he admittedly struggled to deal with effectively. But it was HIS struggle, and no one else should be inconvenienced or judged because of his twisted perception.

I have already said I believe he is a narcissist, but IMO, ALL of these "big name" politicians are narcissists.
