What I see scares me, what I can't see terrifies me.

it's not a Z28, neither a big block.... nor an SS/RS.

$3800 as is.

This. The asking price doesn't matter much, be it $1,000 or $11,500. It's the $80,000+ to make it what it should be that would stop me.

Wasn't looking to buy, just curious if that level of decay was past the point of worth it.

Hate to say it Tim, but you are stuck in 1992. That car will bring what he's asking in a second. On a personal level, do I think they are worth what they bring these days....nope. Problem with that car is, without seeing it, it is tough to judge. If the rocker panels are the only things that have to be cut out, not too big of a deal. Fenders are shot, but they are dirt cheap for replacements. Quarter panels would be my concern. If they are not shot out, needing replacement, that is a good point for the car. But that is a big if. It is a rust belt car. Thing is, these days, 3800 bux will only get you a shell with a tree growing through where the roof used to be. Also, a 307...nothing but a boat anchor. IMO, it would be better to find one in the 20k something range with a good body, paint, and a 327 or above for a motor. Looking at the car, someone will have well over 10k in paint and bodywork in a hurry, and that is a low estimate. That car will be snapped up by someone thinking they will save money since it needs some work. Unless a body man buys it, they will be in for a rude awakening in a hurry.

I met a guy at Cars & Coffee who just bought a 69 Camaro. He said the title listed it as a true SS big block car. His had a 427 in it 4 speed and the body and interior was nice. Also had period right SS Cragers. He said he paid $30,000 for it. It was clean.

That car has more issues than are apparent to the untrained eye. Is it repairable? Yes. Will it take 1500 to 2000 hours to do the whole thing? Yes. Will there be much original sheet metal left at the end? Perhaps 40 percent. Is it worth $11K? As a base , no air, auto, 307 I don't see a financial upside even if you are able to do the whole thing yourself. I may be stuck in the past, but even though it runs and drives I would offer no more than about 4K.

Thing is, it is a running, driving car. Interior is complete, and doesn't look too bad. Trust me on this, he will get what he is asking. I will search around for something way worse than that as an example. Even a Chevelle is a good comparison. Give me a few.

I have no doubt he will get close to asking, it will not be from me though. There are still 1980s priced projects out there for the savvy shopper to snag at yard sale prices. A couple examples from my recent past... 1990 Miata; jumped it off after dragging it home, dried the interior out and patched the blown out rear window. Thorough detailing followed and the biggest expense incurred was filling the gas tank. Paid $350.00. Sold $1100.00, had it less than 2 weeks.

1990 Miata; my current toy. Paid $1500.00; sold hardtop next day for $750.00 so net investment $750. Drove it home and except for a clutch hydraulic failure it has never left me walking in the 5 years I have been tinkering with it.

My avatar 1977 Corvette barn find. Paid $450.00 for a rough roller with clear title. A co-worker fell in love with it as it neared completion... sold $5K.

1990 Miata again. At cars and coffee Saturday a young man approached me about how to modify the suspension on his new 50,000 mile NA. FREE to him because it is cosmetically challenged and the previous owners were frustrated at the difficulty they were having selling the car. He drove that one home as well.

I know where there is a 1969 Barracuda abandoned drag conversion sitting in a local garage because the woman's husband passed before he finished the project. Largely rust free it has been tubbed and the wheel arches cut, and a rollbar is partially installed on the frame connectors. Disc brake conversion complete, and has a 383/727 core powertrain suspended by wood blocks in the engine bay because he was going to convert the slant six K member. Lots of new engine parts, a set of 31 inch slicks, and various and sundry other stuff. She says make an offer, get it on wheels and trailer it home.

Less than a mile from that are a Greenwood bodied big block C3 and a 1977 L82 frozen in mid restoration due to hubby's passing. Both were available at last check as well.
They are still out there.

Exactly; a car has it's initial pedigree; its birth certificate.

This Camaro can be updated with a 369/427, 4sp manual, center console, RS-SS badging and completely redone to perfection. But it will never bring the money that an identical redone Camaro that started out new as a Z28/RS/SS.

My BIL has a 1st gen Camaro, that is rarer than the one in the OP. His has the vaunted straight 6. It has been sitting in the same spot on the lawn for the past 2 or 3 decades. Should be able to get, what, 20k for it?

What about making it a restomod with an LSx in it?

I had no doubt it would sell pretty fast. Having owned several 1969 Camaro's, I am very familiar with them, and the market. That car was a little rough, but I've seen plenty of cars in a lot worse shape go for around 10k. No, it was certainly nothing special, but then again, he wasn't asking Z/28, SS, or anything more rare price. It did have the X11 code, which was nothing more than a trim package, but there were plenty of true SS cars (small block) that had that code. People will try to pass off that code as a SS car, but that doesn't really make it so. Either way, someone has their work cut out for them. At least the floor pans looked good in the pictures, so maybe it won't be too big of a struggle to bring it back. That said, someone can enjoy it while they restore it.
