I've only been to a few air shows but in all cases the planes do a drive-by of the audience. Which means in some cases you don't need a ton of reach.
Tracking a subject moving left - right (or right - left) is fairly easy, especially something like an airplane which is predictable. Tracking a subject moving towards you is the challenge. It's a challenge for the camera focusing system and it's challenging for the shooter. Let's say the P51 is far off in the distance and you're zoomed all the way in to 600mm. As the plane is approaching it's filling more and more of the frame. At some point you'll have to readjust your zoom AND keep the subject in the frame AND your finger on the shutter button. That's a lot to do, things are happening quick. Yes, you can always crop a distant shot in post but it's not preferred since there's quality loss the more you crop. I've been shooting my 800 now for a few years. I'm good at deciding in camera what will be too far away for a crop and what will not. One last important piece of advice and this is a big one; get the lens a few days prior and practice. A lot. Figure out how fast it focuses, get a feel for holding it and panning. Once you have your 'stock' shots, try some with LOW shutter speeds while panning. A solid disc prop is slick looking and none too easy to capture. Also, hope for some nice white puffy clouds. It really adds to the shot! |

Would 'back button focusing' help? I know a lot of sports photographers prefer it and the front button only for the capture. |

**Disclaimer** I've taken thousands of photos with my current technique and I'm very aware how my camera behaves under different shooting conditions. Therefore, change isn't something I'm inclined to adopt easily. I do have my camera set to change from AI Servo to One Shot with a push of the Depth of Field button. |

I'm lucky as far as practice is concerned I live very close to the airfield where this will be held and have quite a few shots from my back yard. Planes are a little far away but good practice panning them. Appreciate the suggestions! |

I posted about this shot earlier here with some background on the subject. I thought it was kind of interesting but the quality was really poor as it was just an extreme crop of a photo I'd already edited. I went back to the original full res edited photo and instead of cropping and exporting a low res jpg, I cropped the high res TIF file even tighter and edited it. The result is still a little soft and there just aren't enough pixels left for a large print but it looks pretty good 8.5x11.
So thought I'd 'resubmit'. The original (read crappy version) is first... hopefully you can see the difference. |
