The Saga Of Dennis LeRoy's Lay-Z-Boy... from DUI to eBay to Court...

Ok, so Dennis LeRoy built this chair. Its a Lay-Z-Boy recliner with headlights, steering wheel and lawnmower engine, capable of 20mph.



After a few drinks at a Proctor, MN watering hole, Mr. LeRoy had a minor accident, leading to his arrest, charged with DUI. Allegedly he "failed everything" the officers asked of him during the roadside sobriety tests.

Police, apparently feeling sorry for LeRoy, offered to expunge one of his prior DUI convictions from his record if he allowed the Department to auction the chair "to benefit taxpayers". LeRoy agreed.

The chair was put on eBay using the "Lay-Z-Boy" name in the auction title and description. Of course, Lay-Z-Boy felt this was damaging to their name and, although they felt bad about stopping the auction meant "to benefit taxpayers", they did file a cease and desist with eBay, who removed the auction, which had reached a high-bid of over $43,000

Within hours the chair was relisted on eBay, sans the "Lay-Z-Boy" moniker. One would think that those taxpayers would now benefit from this auction... but alas... no.

The winning bidder of the second auction has refused to pay, saying the $10,099 winning bid was a mistake and claiming to have no way to pay even the $2,000 deposit now due on the pleather and NHRA stickered ride.

The end of the road? Not by a long shot. Proctor City Attorney John Bray is looking into the city's legal options in getting the bidder to pay.

So from getting nothing but the fine from a DUI, to possibly getting $43K+, to possibly getting $10K+, now to... costing taxpayers money?

Some benefit.
