paper folded maps you got for free at a gas station.....and you ran over a black hose that rang a bell to alert someone you were there to get gas. I used to wear white pants, shirt and a black tie to pump gas at Hess......26.9 cents a gallon

Walking 4 blocks to school alone in 1st thru 3rd grade then coming home and shooting at birds with a BB gun unsupervised.

Pumping 16 cent gas at my dad's service station.

Carrying a pocket knife to school most every day and playing mumbly peg at recess.

Being thankful that our rotary dial phone was not on a party line like many of my friends.

Riding a bicycle behind the city mosquito fogger spraying DDT and pretending we were fighter pilots flying through clouds.

3 digit phone number - no dial. Or we could just tell the operator who we wanted to talk to and they would ring.

Ice delivery.

No fast food franchises -all restaurants were local mom and pop.

Town square.

Saturday morning tv test pattern waiting for Hoppy, Lone Ranger or Sky King.

3 TV channels.

Getting spanked.

I could remember going with my Mom to get school supplies. Always got a new binder, pencil holder, and lunch box. In younger days, new Chief tablet.

I grew up in Fayetteville NC, a basetown for Fort Bragg. Half my family was in the military, the other half were hippies.

I remember seeing rooms full of strange combinations of military fatigues, love beads, Vietnam artifacts that would not even get into the country now; such as ivory and elephant feet and ears. Along with a lot of bamboo junk, little Budda statues, and a bunch of silk. Spent artillery casings made into bongs and other hippie art. Shag carpets, parachutes hanging from the ceilings and 82nd airborne insignia on everything. Zodiac posters and Donovan playing through a pot haze.

Culture clashes from hell. Weird times, weird times indeed.
I had a kick-ass lava lamp though.

Speaking of shag carpets-we had shag carpet in our living room. I swear during the winter it could produce enough static electricity to power Dallas for a day. I could still remember the terror when I'd see my dog running across the carpet to jump in my lap.

Tossing one off to a JC Penney catalog, because even getting your hands on a playboy was impossible.

Yup, we had a party line when we lived in the country.

Had 3 channels, and they were mostly "snowy". Yup, got spanked as a kid. My 12 year old could use a good spanking.

In the 50's and early 60's cars had real chrome bumpers . In the rust belt of the country in winter to protect against salt on the roads, people put cosmoline on the chrome bumpers. Cosmoline is a brown waxy substance.
