Obviously, he didn't deserve to be put off the flight, but by the time security has come to boot you off and you still don't leave, instead choosing to make a scene by screaming and forcing them to drag you off the plane? You are just making a conscious choice to pad your damage claim against United, in the same way people who are in a minor accident jump out of their car and flop around on the ground screaming in "pain." That was all theater on behalf of the passenger.

And this guy is supposed to be a doctor? Personally, I wouldn't trust the judgement of anyone who, in the face of overwhelming odds, decides to pull a sit in. The whole thing reminds me of the idiot protestors who block roads by sitting down and refusing to move.

Yes, the guy is a victim, he didn't deserve to get tossed of the flight, but he certainly did everything he could to make things as uncomfortable as he could, for not only himself, but for all the other passengers. Other people were also booted off that flight, and none of them screamed and had to be dragged off the plane. Why? I guess they won't collect a big payday like our "doctor."

I'd note that Delta does the same thing (overbooking flights). They just don't let you get on the plane.

United has been low on my list of carriers for a long time. Every time I've had to fly United I've come across least one, sometimes many, of their employees with an obvious disdain for the customer. Not directed at me generally, but just a piss poor attitude by the gate and flight attendants.

Wouldn't surprise me if the gate "kicked the can" and made the flight crew deal with it.

I remember years ago there was a guy who laid his legs across train tracks thinking that it would stop a train carrying nuclear waste from leaving a depot. Guess what happened?

It's really not an issue of what he "deserved" because contractually, United had every right to do what they did. When you buy a ticket, you agree to the terms of the contract (which almost no one reads). ALL airlines overbook (a practice that should stop) and have done so for years. However, United is not obligated to allow you to fly because you hold a ticket. You can be removed from the plane at any point while at the gate and they are only legally obligated to refund your purchase price. The fact that they were willing to compensate people by offering them $800 cash and a paid hotel stay just shows what an idiot this guy was. The mistake United made was pulling people off the plane after they were seated. They are still within their rights, but it wasn't the most delicate way to go about it. The minute the guy refused to comply with instructions of the flight crew, he was in the wrong.

And I have to disagree about him being a victim. Victims are not offered financial compensation for their inconvenience.

I'm sure he'll sue, and there will be a major brouhaha about it. The media will have a field day with this one. I really hope United fights it however. This nonsense about allowing the court of public opinion to rule the world has to stop.

That was at Concord Weapons Station/Concord CA. The train was carrying conventional weapons from the inland to the tidal section of the base. His name was Brian Wilson in fact. I arrived there for shore duty right after it happened as an MP. But yea, people think that they can stop the inevitable usually lose.

While I would never do what the guy did, I am a little glad he did it. Right or wrong, it brings United some well deserved bad publicity for doing a shitty thing.
