Whacked after 16 years

Just had my gig at Cisco eliminated. New top guy in my division so of course everything has to be re-orged. Dodged this bullet many times, guess it was my turn.

I have 2 weeks to find something internally, not likely, then I get a fairly nice little separation package.

On a positive note, this happened to my wife last month and she starts her new job Monday, so there will be no interruption of health benefits. She also wrangled a 30% pay increase.

Now all I need to do is find something, and I think I will fairly quickly, but I am going to make sure it is what I want, not just something to have something. I have a ton of contacts in the industry and have never burned any bridges, hopefully that helps.

Good luck. I got laid off in December 2014 and , in my field, the job market has deteriorated to the point of being a waste of time.

At least I saw it coming and planned for it.

Maybe some new opportunities will come your way. Whatever your field is, if it makes you happy and you can make a living at it, the contact's you have may come in handy. If you're at a point in life where doing something different is an option, go for it.

My last job working for someone else was in 1979 and somehow I made it this far.

But do have a possible job interview next week.

A few roles. Started as a Consulting Systems Engineer for Unified Messaging, I was a Subject Matter Expert on Cisco Unity and integrations to Active Directory and Exchange. (sales position)

Next role was a Technical Marketing Enginer, basically the same as the previous role but not in Sales, instead I worked between the Sales teams, customers and Product dev teams. Did design consulting, tech doc development, Trade show support, critical account support, that kind of thing.

Currently I am a Program Manager, working with prodcut dev teams to coordinate 35-50 different products to release at the same time as a solution, while working with Marketing, Partner development and various other groups to resolve go-to-market issues.

Same thing happened to a very good friend around Thanksgiving time last year. He was in sales at Cisco. I think Cisco is tightening the belt and their only option left is eliminating people.

I have been extremely bored for the last 2 years, I needed a push to make a change, this was more like a shove but I will leave with a nice pile of cash and have many people reaching out to me already. I am going to make sure whatever I do it will have the elements that make me happy day to day. No more putting up with shit for comfort and safety. No such thing anyway.
